The last great Madness gig, Folgate Friday, was some four months ago now, but we can now bring you an exclusive video of “Africa”, the one and only time Madness have performed this track live from The Liberty Of Norton Folgate. Africa is the track Iain Horne once told us was his favourite from the album.

Suggs and Friends

The charity fund raising evening “Suggs and Friends” makes a welcome return this coming March. The 2014 fundraiser takes place on March 20th at 6.30pm, with champagne reception and auction.

The £150 donation tickets for pancreatic cancer gain entry to the Porchester Hall event in London W2. There’s no announcement yet as to who is joining Suggs at the exclusive event.

Louis Vause – Midnight in Havana

“Oh dear. I’m alive..!” Pianist Louis Vause has always said that his albums are “Gouged out of him by circumstance” but his third album ‘Midnight In Havana’really is a case in point.

Recorded as a valedictory set, a swansong if you like, after he was told that the onset of cancer meant that he had mere months to live, the completion of the work coincided with his liver transplant and the all clear. He was in the pink. The same could not be said for his credit cards which had covered Louis’ uncharacteristically cavalier spending on recording costs.

Deaf School – the story is told at last!

“For me, the gigs Deaf School have done recently have been some of the best I’ve seen by any band.”

So writes Suggs in his foreword to a book, published this month amid a flurry of Deaf School gigs and other Book Launch events, charting the creation and career of a band that influenced so many artists that followed – and that still fills venues 40 years after their debut at the Liverpool School of Art Christmas Dance.

Deaf School had a huge impact on Madness (Suggs: “Back in my youth I met some characters who were a right bunch, but what we had in common was that we loved Deaf School.”) – not least, of course, because guitarist Clive Langer’s became Madness producer and because Suggs married Deaf School singer Bette Bright!

Written by leading rock music writer, author and broadcaster Paul du Noyer, a lifetime Deaf School fan, Deaf School: The Non-Stop Pop Art Punk Rock Party, is published later this month by the Liverpool University Press, priced at £14.99. SPECIALIZED – MEET THE ARTISTS

Well… this is going to be special….Specialized are very chuffed to announce that Mr Phill Jupitus AKA Porky Poet and the legend that is Terry Edwards will be appearing on Specialized 3 – Mad Not Cancer! The guys will be performing a very different version of “Keep Moving”.

Phill needs no introduction really but for those who don’t know- Phill Jupitus began his performing career in 1984, when he quit working in a Job Centre to become a ranting poet, Porky Poet, quickly rising to prominence supporting such bands as The Style Council and The Housemartins. While working for indie record label Go! Disc his duties included being press officer for the The Housemartins and directing videos for Billy Bragg and the late Kirsty McColl.

In the evenings Phill’s poetry and compering became so successful he would go to tour with such luminaries as Madness, The Who and Paul Weller.

1995 saw the beginning of Phill’s radio career hosting his own show at BBC Greater London Radio. In 2000 Phill had the honour of playing the first ever record on the BBC’s new dedicated music station 6Music as its inaugural Breakfast DJ. he is of course a regular captain on Never Mind The Buzzcocks , a regular on QI on the BBC.He loves music and is a huge fan of acts like Bonzo Dog Doodah band, The Specials (he was down at the front of The Specials secret reunion gig at Bestival in 2008) ,Madness,The Jam ,The Clash and their contemporaries and a lover of all things ska and reggae. He appeared, albeit in a cameo role on Rhoda Dakars track ” Too Nice To Talk To” on Specialized 2 and is currently touring as Porky Poet.

Learnt trumpet & piano at school. Started playing guitar at thirteen. Was given a saxophone on his18th birthday Went to the University of East Anglia from 1979-82 to get into a band. Managed to do that and come away with a degree in music as well First releases made with The Higsons where he was a joint founding member and appeared on the 2Tone label (1980-86) Formed BUtterfield 8 with ‘Young’ Mark Bedford in 1987 Having been in several bands and played many sessions, 1991 saw the first solo releases on Jacko Boogie’s STIM label, actively encouraged by the aforementioned Mr Bedford

1991-present has seen a prolific musical career take in an unfeasible amount of diverse work both as a session player (stopped counting the number of releases once they’d got into three figures), live performer (stopped counting the gigs once they’d got into four figures) and solo artist both with & without sidesmen The Scapegoats)

First up, the Magic Brothers Tuesday night was superb, better than their debut. Better overall performance and sound quality. Nick seemed more relaxed perhaps due to the smaller crowd and great atmosphere. Same set less “Smile” as Nick had a bit of a sore throat and couldn’t reach the high pitches. The encore demanded again – this time “In Your Mind” and “Friday Night, Saturday Morning”. The crowd loved it. I’ll send through a full review next week.

Finally, and perhaps potentially very interestingly, although details are a bit sketchy. Tony tells me there is a ska band called The Skammers (I think that’s the spelling) who are playing Tuesday 25th March @ Enfield. Apparently they will be joined by Lee and Daley. Tony heard that from the band themselves as he knows 1 or 2 of them. This is ahead of them appearing supporting Lee next month.
Thommo was at the Magic Brothers gig last night – he recognised me :o) so I asked him about this – although he denied he’d be playing he said (about one of the band) “…I bet he runs off with all the (gig) money..” which suggested he would be playing!?!! Yikes!

The triumphant return of The Lee Thompson Ska Orchestra in Camden Town Thursday was a packed out, bounced out, SkankalongaDingwalls. Wow what a gig. I was lapping up the big hits. Bangarang with guest “Summi” went down a storm. Two new treats in the guitar riffing, drum stopping “Tunnel One” and dancing Darren gave us “Cry to Me” with a tear in the eye, or maybe just the sweat from a room full of happy dancing people. An awesome time was had by the gathered fans.
Things began with loyal son Kye Thompson, setting up with the venue, helping his dad make sure the event brought in the dosh, from his promotion, and door work tonight, and here he was setting up the merchandise stall. Dingwalls is a picturesque barn of a venue by the canal side and set against the smells of Camden’s food market, under today’s shining sun. Myself and Looby Loo survey the scene from the very bridge over the lock that starred in “one better day” and this indeed was a day where you forget everything and sink into music for the better, we find our way into the sound check and find Thommo blowing a few notes through his sax by the bar. This is a venue Madness have played before, and tonight The Ska Orchestra push further into their second phase with new tunes joining the running order. Amusing stories of previous gigs banter back and forth. Darren Fordham comes over and proudly mentions tonight he’s doing a new one, a track from Dirty Dancing, “and I’m Patrick Swayzee” he says. A shrugging look of horror passes between me and Looby at the thought of some poncy Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes – Time of my Life power ballading ruining the best ska band in Camden tonight! Fortunately when it comes to this moment, we aren’t getting Darren’s Patrick Swayzee at all. We are getting his Crying Man. He’s an entirely different character, if you’ve ever seen the TV show Sliders you’ll know him, but given that’s a cult, musically it’s James Brown’s faux protestations on stage of emotion weakening him during living the song that are the hallmark for this soul man’s pleadings. It’s a Solumun Burke 60’s tune. Near to Sam Cooke in style and totally fitting of the era of tunes the ska orchestra deliver, slightly wider than ska but all the more brilliant for it fitting alongside. Loved it. Check it out here…
Cry To Me

There are two guitarists tonight, left of stage the returning Kevin Burdett is back and takes the Mission Impossible solo to new heights. Right of stage as you look on Andy Neal’s Twang is put to it’s greatest use yet with new cover of Tommy McCook,
Tunnel One. This instrumental is full of break stops, and a joyus little twist.

Louis Vause is once again singing the parts of Napoleon Solo. While Thommo continues to grin at Louis teeth when ever he gets a chance to point them out. Louis is fresh from being busy with a charity portraits project. Check it out in the NME and other publications of the art work auction from names like Suggs, Graham Coxon and more.
The main sax man is on fine form tonight, whether he’s heckling the present Mr Barso for asking for guest list, or chucking iPads across the room that he’s nicked off the audience. He’s enjoying himself again, as the front man of such a fine group of musicians. The joy is ever present in his mood, it’s infectious, and welcoming to go along and be included alongside his capers.
Tonight as fans we managed a new personal best in the age range, into a Lee, our friend Iain Palmer who i’d like to dedicate this review too (because of recent personal loss) heralds from pre two tone tour era Lee Thompson fandom, while a befriended visiting American student got into his music just two year ago aged 18. Near 35 years a gap of appreciation for the exciting sax man who captivates a crowd.
A guest singer “Summi” young dark and sultry looking, is ushered on to join the band, while her vocals for one track have clearly been prepared, it feels almost like she’s brought on too early, looking timid and out of place at first, adding nothing much to Sit and Wonder, She’s then great on Bangarang Though. We get yet another version as she’s singing Lee’s written lyrics for the track. Including his second verse heard for the first time. It’s a nice twist, and a great performance. No, No, No however is real Wower moment, becoming a legendary last show section placed killer track, and here in the packed venue, with summi in the band, and Darren perfectly directing the hushing of the crowd, the tune once again is the track that unites audience and band into one unit in a masterful sing along of instrumental riffs. Dropping from this into Fu Man Chu and soon you’ll be gone is like the band finding their own showtime set of perfect end of set tunes. Making the shouted for encore a must needed desire of the present crowd. Yes, yes, yes.

An extra well done to Steve White for playing on regardless of an injury, and still giving it all, when it came to encore Broadway Jungle. By which time I was a kangaroo with ska through out my bones to a great end to the night. Full on ska satisfaction.
I think soul serenade was listed but dropped probably because the excellent ghost town like downsetters support band were stuck in traffic causing a late start to the night.

Stars Attend A Charity Night Of Reggae

On Wednesday, Save the Children held A Night of Reggae at the Roundhouse in London sponsored by RB.

Attended by over 500 guests including Helena Bonham Carter, Sir Michael Caine, Colin Firth, Livia Firth, Damian Lewis, Helen McCrory, Dominic West, Jon Snow, Ali Bastian, Alexander Armstrong and Helen Fielding, the event raised over £1.4 million pounds for the charity through ticket sales and auction items.

Suggs and Sly & Robbie performed ‘Cecilia’ for the first time since they produced it back in the 1980s, and were joined on stage by the father of Reggae, Ernest Ranglin as well as the other artists to perform the hit track by Madness ‘It Must Be Love’

This week, MIS co-editor Rob Hazelby, goes back 5 years to issue 515, and the week of Sunday 15th March to Saturday 21st March 2009, and then back 10 years to issue 253 and the week of Sunday 14th February to Saturday 20th February 2004.

Issue 515 – Sunday 15th March to Saturday 21st March 2009

Following last weekend’s Saturday release, we were now back to our regular Sunday slot once more, and unless we had something special to announce, we’d be staying with the Sunday release dates for the foreseeable future.

The new look, leather bound official Madness website opened it’s desk this week so we took the opportunity to give you a descriptive tour of the new sections, including a mood board where you could hear 32 seconds of one of the band’s forthcoming tracks, “The Hunchback of Torriano”.

After his lengthy write-up, Jonathan finished off his review of the new site by commenting;

“All in all it’s a stylish new classic look for the official site, that was well over due, and is nicely executed. We look forward to visiting it, and as always we’ll keep you updated by email of when the site has updates”.

Moving on, and as we’d always been strong supporters of North London band MOT, not only because one or two of their number are subscribed to the MIS, but also because their gigs felt exactly like how we assume the early Madness gigs were like, back in the late 1970’s, we urged you to vote for them in a Band Hacker web site competition.

The winners of the compo would be given a recording contract with a major record producer.

Well, what were you waiting for?

“Let’s Dance For Comic Relief” aired on BBC1 on Saturday March 7th, raising money for the charity of the same name. Suggs and Zoe Ball appeared as the third act on the show to recreate the iconic dance scene featured in seminal Tarantino movie “Pulp Fiction.”

The duo did well, but sadly crashed out in fifth place.

It was on to Man Like Me news next, as we reported that the band had been booked to support Madness at their forthcoming Madstock 5 festival. For many this would be the first opportunity they’d have to see the band perform live.

Madness Central news next, and following the 30 second upload to the Official Madness web site of “The Hunchback of Torriano”, Steve Bringe had spoken to Chris over the phone about the track, and kindly shared a number of tidbits with the rest of us.

One of the snippets was that Chris had based the guitar on the style of Duran Duran’s Andy Taylor.

Madness weren’t the only people relaunching their website this week, as Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley’s site has had a similar new look applied, which included an rss feed blog of news.

They were reporting that their involvement on Folgate was finished, after 3 years of work. Madness were also going to be mentioned in the biography, which is an extract of a forthcoming book called “Producers on Producing”.

We brought this issue to a close with the news that the Liberty of Norton Folgate had received a delay in being shipped. The waiting continued.

10 years ago…

Issue 253 – Sunday 14th February to Saturday 20th March 2004

The day after the previous issue of the MIS blasted forth across the internet a small snippet appeared on the Sun web site, and was kindly passed over to us by subscriber, Stav.

The snippet (along with Chas’ response, which appeared on his own web site) read:

“THE original seven members of MADNESS are set to sign a record deal for the band in the next fortnight.

SUGGS and the rest of the baggy trousers gang plan an album of new tunes”.

Chas was quick to respond with:

“Dear Smasheads,

We are in rehearsals……the Sun has not got a clue what we are up to…….

adios

smash”

For those of us eagerly anticipating new Madness material, it now looked as if the wait would be that bit longer.

Moving on, and after much badgering of our subscribers we were pleasantly surprised when subscriber Celia Moore revealed that she’d taken our advice and had managed to see MOT at Kentish Town’s Bull and Gate.

At the time Celia commented that:

“M.O.T. went down a storm at the Bull and Gate on Saturday, playing some old and some new songs, they are by far the best up and coming group around with a sound all their own but with hints of various groups especially Madness.

Ryan can be delightfully Suggs-like and Danny is a devil on the drums, and with brilliant keyboard and guitar playing by Sam, Ian and Phil, this is the group of the future.

I have seen them several times now and they are getting better every time, anyone who hasn’t seen them yet is missing the best thing since Madness and should get down to their next gig which may well be at the Dublin Castle!”

Elsewhere, and although we’d been promising it for a few weeks, the sheer scale of the project meant that it was taking longer to pull off that we initially expected. What am I on about? The full transcript of Suggs’ recent appearance on Radio 2’s Steve Wright Show.

Unsurprisingly, the fans didn’t learn too much about the band’s future plans, but the interview still proved to be an enjoyable read. Suggs covered such topics as Salvage Squad, his home in Italy, and the fact that the band were extremely pleased with how the Christmas shows went, and were now talking about doing a new recording.

We finished off this issue with an apology, due to the fact that the MIS web site had recently vanished off the face of the earth. No, this time it wasn’t due to me uploading some pages to the wrong section of the site, but down to the server suffering a fatal hard disk error, and our ISP not having a back-up. We kid you not!

With and almost snorable inevitability, “The Very Best of Madness” is due to be released on April 7th. The Metro Select Label sees it line up along with a whole range of other “best of” double CD packages of other great artists.
