The Montrose Music Festival recently held a competition for shop windows in the area to go a bit “Madness” themed (or Ash themed, as they are also playing in the area) as part of a local competition.
The support bands for the Scottish dates are By The Rivers, who also appeared at Hove today with backbeat sound system. The Lottery Winners who will also be the support that gig are the second support band in Scotland.
The Grandslam goes from strength to strength with another new song Mumbo Jumbo emerging at Newmarket, which sold out all normal seating leaving only a few grandstand tickets, leading to another packed out show at the racecourse.
Now, on with the issue!
Enjoy the read,
Jon Young, Rob Hazelby, Simon Roberts, Paul Williams

The Grandslam Sporting Tour Programme
Once again Gavin Martin, a vetran of writing Madness Tour Programmes steps up to the podium in first place when it comes to delivering a quality item.
Like the tour itself the Grandslam Programme takes inspiration from the world of sport, and the easy to hold A5ish sized glossy booklet compiled by “Talking Music Revolutions” this year resembles the kind of programmes you get at Football stadiums. Decked in the green theme of the tour, the massive amounts of inside writing starts with an amusing piece by a fictional groundskeeper of the event you are attending, in tone like that of a slightly disgruntled parkie.
A four page chat with Suggs, begins in general, before venue specific questions are asked. Each of the six band members are graphically made superimposed as sporting heros in great artwork in with the booklet, over double page spreads, interviewing them with a plethora of match stats like statistic on life, and both music and sporting opinions. There are some amusing photoshop jobs too that we wont spoil but they are a must see. Clive Langer appears via the photo back drop shots of last years Mad Head tour. A number of parents proudly get their little wonders into a Mascot corner (Well done to Kev Crowther, Carol Escate, and Sheena Robert and families to name just three there.) While all the current solo albums, Chas, Woody, and forthcoming LTSO are all give a shout out advert. All this comes at the price of £5 that’s the kind of value Stirling Moss would approve of, or George Best raise a pint of Gladness to. It gets the MIS trophy of best conceptual design layout.

Suggs Talks to Jo Good on BBC London on June 10th, On Blackheath
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02s8ppp
Interview starts at 1 hour 9 minutes in.
Suggs talked about. Fame. “People are mostly nice to me.”
“Suggsyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy is the Doppler effect” he says as people shout at him out of passing vans.
Jubilee. “When the letter came in the post, handwritten from the Queen it was very nice.”
The Feel Good value of Madness music. “The music is the by product of us all being mates together, we had a charity gig the other night, and everyone was having a good time when we arrived, we aren’t a group that gazes at our shoes and screams about the world.”
A clip of Suggs on a documentary on the 60’s fashion is played. Julian Temple’s film on London Babylon is mentioned.
Kipper ties to Cheese Cloth, Suggs explains Madness’ style.
Have you ever been tempted to leave London? “I’m not mad on the country side in the UK in Winter.”
“I love London I’ve gone through that grumpy old man stage of moaning about everything changing. My kids say thank god Camden is different you can get something to eat now, and it’s not just full of Irish men punching each other.”
Suggs talks about the Marathon Bar.
They talk about On Blackheath. Suggs talks about The Kinks musical being on, Dynamo the musician, best reggae DJ, Giles Peterson, and more. Madness are playing a varied set of hits and a few new songs and obscure album tracks. At 9pm.

In Your Mind – Woody Woodgate album review by Hell Hound Music.
http://www.hellhoundmusic.com/madness-drummer-woody-woodgate-releases-debut-elosupertramp-inspired-solo-album-dw-records/?utm_content=buffer7bb94&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer
Woody Woodgate, drummer with Madness, is pleased to announce the release of his debut solo album, ‘In Your Mind’, released 6th July on DW Records. Receiving critical acclaim as the Magic Brothers with younger brother Nick and the 2013 release, ‘The Magic Line, his solo record is an impressive and highly personal collection of songs with Woody’s pop sensibility and big production values ever present throughout the record.
With the Magic Brothers put to one side due to Nick’s on-going battle with mental health issues, Woody was keen to get back in the studio, and he’s delivered another collection of fine upbeat retro pop. Having suffered mental health problems in his teens and twenties, Nick was sectioned under the mental health act age 27, eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia. This has led to Woody’s recent collaboration with the UK charity Rethink Mental Illness in which he acts as an ambassador alongside Dame Judi Dench and Alastair Campbell.
From the power pop of ‘Magic Train’ to the direct, jaunty ‘Something’; it is a collection of songs that offer pure unadulterated fun. There’s a quintessentially British melancholy to a bouncy pop aesthetic throughout. Writing and arranging the songs including the strings, and brass parts, he also programmed, produced, mixed and mastered the record.
The bright ‘Everything Is Sunshine’ and the playful ‘Flower’ offer woozy ELO influenced psychedelia while the 70s pop rock classicism of ‘Mother’ and ‘Shaman’ are reminiscent of McCartney or Squeeze, with a bit of Pink Floyd thrown in for good measure.
Still very much part of Madness, Woody has been a regular contributor to the Madness archive of songs down the years. Their success has never been greater and this summer they are to embark on the ‘Grandslam Madness’ Tour – a series of performances at iconic sporting venues across the country, including cricket grounds, rugby grounds, football stadiums, racecourses and racetracks.
‘In Your Mind’ is a complete and joyous affair with an eye for childlike wonder and pop sensibility.
The bouncy breezy ‘In Your Mind’ bursts with a rich sense of brotherly love – an ode to a younger brother battling with his demons. ‘Come To Me’ continues the theme – idiosyncratic and undeniably catchy, it stings the senses in all the right places including a bristling brass section.
‘We’re All Going To Brighton’ shares childhood memories with an easy going, seaside feel while the ska-tinged ‘Friday Night To Sunday Morning’ recollects the nutty boy’s slick, big production pop.
The most reflective moment on the record belongs to album closer ‘Thank You’, a soothingly melancholic ballad complete with strings and horns, Woody’s most intimate and affecting song on record to date.
With a little help from some close friends including South London born singer-songwriter Dan Shears (vocals), Tim Maple (guitar/keyboards), Dan Drury (bass), The Brass Monkeys (Madness’ brass section), wife Siobhan Fitzpatrick (vocals), and brother Nick (Oohs, Aahs, and guitar solos), ‘In Your Mind’ floats along on a sea of nostalgia and sing-along appeal.
Look out for Woody Woodgate solo shows soon.

Night Boat To Cairo
“Although we only had Grandstand tickets, we decided to dress up which later paid off. After a slightly tipsy departure from the mini bus we finished our drinks but were then told to walk around the block as we were looking slightly ‘jolly’. After finally getting in we were. It was great to bump into a few ‘All things Madness’ members including fellow admin Alan Flynn. (Disappointed to see that Alan’s official stickers were not on sale at the merchandise stall.)
By 8:30 our dress code paid off as we were let into the Premier enclosure before 9pm & managed to get a barrier spot.
Madness came out to a tremendous cheer & opened with Grandslam. Not many people singing but an appropriate start no less.
Bedders was absent [at a family engagement] but his replacement [Dan Drury?] did a great job.
Few familiar songs followed by Take it or leave it”, was great to hear along with ‘You Said, ‘Los Palmas 7′ John Jones’ as its not ones they generally play.
The boys were on top form especially Lee Thompson who was as funny as ever & did a superb job with added vocals. Highlights were him reading his words to ‘Mumbo Jumbo’ ~ how professional ~ lol. And throwing his tambourine, missing its stand & a security man taking ages to return it. [As Chrissy boy said on ATM “We now have Thommo Time!” ]
Although we’d love to see Chas back in the band we still thought the gig was great, however Suggs didn’t seem to give One Step Beyond his all, we wondered if this was because of the absence of Mr Smash. As usual Chrissy Boy gave the boys a breather by taking centre stage with Showtime which the crowd loved.
The gig ended with ‘It must be Love’ but they soon reappeared for the encore of ‘Madness’ & of cause ‘Nightboat to Cairo’ which left the crowd buzzing. We left just after 11pm feeling fore filled but the icing on the cake was managing to get a copy of the set list.
We’re writing this review as we head off to Brighton for some more Madness Mayhem at Hove tomorrow. Watch this space.

MIS FEATURE – THE INFLATABLES 35th ANNIVERSARY WITH RODDY RADIATION
Oxfords finest, as they are often referred to, have been going 35 years. The Inflatables the well known Ska and Reggae band from the lower west midlands are celebrating their long term musical achievements and friendships together over three and a half decades with a big local gig.
Our man Tony Bass, lead singer and good friend of the MIS, hasn’t been the front man all that time, his roots go back to a Madness Weekender infact that MIS helped organise in Blackpool circa 2007 or so.
You can hear all the band talk about their first time joining up or early days starting the band in this Oxford radio interview which is live for just a couple more days to hear on the BBC.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02rt5jm
Beginning with an airing of their Specialized Madness song cover of Believe Me from Mad Not Cancer, and you can also hear an original Inflatables song “Carry Me Over” too.
The talk about the band starting out and give out details of this July’s big gig, the big excitement is that Special’s legend Roddy Radiation will be joining the band during their set and playing with them!!!
The 35th anniversary concert is….
The Inflatables celebrate 35 years with a party at O2 Oxford, Saturday 18th July.
Special Guest appearance with The Inflatables – Roddy Radiation from The Specials will play with the band.
Appearing also on the bill on the night,
The Neville Staple band
King Hammond and Skaville UK
Local band The Duckworths
DJ Jason Hughes.
Tickets £20, available from the band, www.facebook.com/theInflatables
or O2 Box Office 01865 813500 / 01865 813500
The evening is Raising money for Teenage cancer Trust
Don’t miss it, especially if you are an Oxford resident.
They’ve twice appeared with us at MIS Presents Sunday evening at The House of fun. So any of you who enjoyed the Reggae set or last years two tone set at Jaks you will know what a great atmosphere the band can create. While this year it’s too early to tell, its to early to say, and it’s also on the cards to be a little different in set up, but later in the year listen out for something of those inflatables originals Carried over into November MIS tour antics if plans come to fruition, whatever happens next. But first in July it’s time for the clock to strike 35 for The Inflatables.

I REMEMBER WAY BACK WHEN
This week, MIS co-editor Rob Hazelby, goes back in time to report on what was going on in the world of Madness 5 years, 10 and 15 years ago this week.
Issue Number 582 – Sunday 27th June – Saturday 3rd July 2010
Things may have been quiet in the Madness camp at the moment, but regardless of that we still had a mammoth issue for you this week.
We kicked things off with the news that BBC Radio 4 would be broadcasting a two week season of programmes exploring how London had changed over the previous 25 years. What did this have to do with Madness? Well, one of the presenters and contributors was non other than our man Suggs.
Next, we moved on to The Blockheads’ Chaz Jankel, who was releasing his first solo album in ten years. In this section we included a review with the man and one of the first independent reviews of this forthcoming release.
Further on, and we had some birthday news, as the Retro Madness web site celebrated its first birthday. To mark the occasion they were offering a cashback deal to all customers – for every £50 you spent in a single transaction, they wouldl refund £5 back to you…spend £100 receive £10 back, £150 receive £15 back etc. This was in addition to free UK postage on all orders. Crazy!
Next, it was on to the subject of discount tickets, as Epsom Downs Racecourse were offering a 25% discount on all tickets sold prior to the Madness Racecourse event on the 29th July. Not bad at all!
Further on, and it was over to the stat-meister himself, Mr. Paul Rogers. Paul was back with yet another one of his chart-stat based emails, and this week he began with news of the Ultimate Madness album which had been heavily promoted by Tesco.
“As I expected, the Tesco promotion of Ultimate Madness and One Step Beyond… caused a minor surge in popularity of Madness albums currently available to buy. Somewhat surprisingly Complete Madness was the biggest beneficiary of this publicity, surging from number 50 to number 24 on the indie album chart, where One Step Beyond… leapt from 48 to 39 and Total Madness was a re-entry at number 42. Who cares I hear you cry? Well the thing is the number 20 on the indie chart made the top 200 on the main album chart. So sales are respectable.”
Paul also reported on forthcoming releases, and it was nice to see that both the Rise and Fall and Keep Moving re-issues had spent a large chunk of the previous week in Amazon’s top 10 pre-order charts.
We continued with Paul, who, in the next article reviewed the forthcoming Rise and Fall and Keep Moving re-issues. With all the care and attention applied to each album, and the mountains of extras on each Paul was faced with no option but to give each of them 5 out of 5!
It was time for a bit of Madness history next, as Jon Young, Looby and Andrew Sandoval gave regaled us with the band’s numerous appearances between 1980 and 1984 on American Bandstand, the long running music show. Madness Central had managed to not only source recordings of these performances but make them available on YouTube for the rest of us to enjoy.
We brought this issue of the MIS to a close with the news that the next Big 10 gig would take place at The Dublin Castle on Saturday 17th July, and that Suggs had been spotted DJing at the 40th anniversary Glastonbury Festival.
Issue Number 320 – Sunday 26th June to Saturday 2nd July 2005
With further concerts having taken place since our last issue we once again started off by welcoming all those who had signed up since last Sunday’s MIS.
News in from Dan Burdett of JAG, was that Stuart Wright of fanzine Nut Inc had spent the last few months attending gigs, the studio and \ drinking sessions with the band, and would now be putting together a weekly JAG newsletter. Not only that, but the newsletter was strictly old skool, meaning it would land on your door mat, and not your email inbox.
Madness’ recent performance at Westonbirt Arboretum hadn’t gone un-noticed by Bristol’s Evening Post, as the local paper dedicated a massive article to the gig, describing it as one of the most fun filled gigs they’d been to in ages, and the best they’d seem of Madness.
Continuing on the subject of the band’s current tour was Graham Whitfield, who sent us a massive article covering the Dalby Forest gig. Being so near the venue, Graham finished off his article, declaring it as “The best ever Madness show – almost in our back garden”.
MIS subscriber Richard Stinson continued the string of rave reviews of the Forest Tour, with a detailed and glowing write-up of the Sherwood Forest gig. Could the boys do no wrong?
Moving away from the tour reviews saw us print a complete transcript of Skanews’ interview with Woody, Lee and Mark, a few hours before recording the Taratata broadcast to the Plaine Saint Denis. The three of them talked in-depth about The Dangermen Sessions and working with V2 Records.
It was back to The Forest Tour in the next article, where we passed the reigns over to Paul Williams with his lowdown on the Dalby Forest gig, which took place on the 24th of June. Paul’s what yet another in a long line of glowing reviews from fans and press alike.
We finished off this week’s issue with Lee Hookway’s review of MOT, and their gig at The Metro Club on Saturday the 18th of June.
Issue Number 58 – Sunday 25th June to Saturday 1st July 2000
We started off this weeks’ issue with details of how you could get hold of tickets to the Crunch! gig due to take place at Camden’s Underworld on the 14th of July.
As The Dublin Castle was still closed for some much needed refurbishment on the date of the gig, people were already asking where could the event meet-up be held. There had been no definite decision as of yet, but a number of people had suggested `The Spreadeagle`, which could (and still can!) be found a few hundred yards down from the DC on the opposite side of the road.
Next-up, saw us dish out the “Rhythmstock Awards”, where we highlighted the antics of a few of those who attended the recent fundraising event, and promptly embarrassed them for things they got up to while under the influence.
With news thin on the ground we took a look at the forthcoming record fairs planned by VIP Events. Of interest to most Madness fans had to be the regular record fairs held at the famous Electric Ballroom in Camden Town. You could get a good morning’s record hunting done before heading off to one of the local pubs.
Next was Simsey, who was keen to put up a list of “Who got what” on his web site, so you could see who beat your bid(s) at the recent Rhythmstock fundraising event.
Moving on, and we took a look at issue 6 of Ian Taylor’s excellent Mad Not Mad fanzine. With a cover price of a mere £2, this issue was fantastic value, and one that deserved to sell like proverbial hot cakes.
We finished off this issue by looking at the new Velvet Ghost web site, and giving the place a section by section lowdown. Simon Roberts (the reviewer) told us to keep an eye on the place, as it was being updated more often than some official sites he could mention. With the official Madness site receiving very infrequent updates at the time, it wasn’t hard to work out what he was referring to.

TIME…
We’re almost done for this week, but before we go there are a couple of final bits to pass in your general direction.
First-up, and if you’re in the Essex area, Mr Happy Madness’ DJ from House of Fun Weekenders, is doing a Ska/Mod/Punk/Reggae/Brit Pop night next Friday July 3rd at Club Woodham, Baron Rd, South Woodham Ferres Essex, CM35XQ from 8pm till Midnight. Free Entry.
And finally, it’s over to Chrissy Boy and some album chat…
“Personally speaking, I’d like to get it all recorded this year once the tour is finished. Then release early next year. This may not happen of course. At the moment we are writing/rehearsing three days a week and then getting songs ready to play live. “Mumbo Jumbo” was only rehearsed last week. Still a “work in progress”. We are all having a great time. We are rehearsing next Wednesday. The place we are using is very cheap (£44 for six hours! ) with no windows or distractions”.
Until next week, take care,
