Monthly Madpost – April 1997

Well, what a strange month March was. We’ve covered such differing topics ranging from “Suggs and his House of Fun Remix”, to simple home economics lessons involving the discussion of “Fried Bread”. No one can say that the mailing list isn’t educational ;)

May I just remind the Maddies who have put their names down for either the UK or US Madmeet’s on the 19th April to read the relevant sections of the Madpost carefully so that they’re up together on all the details relating to their relevant meet. We don’t want any Maddies left behind at Camden Station or in the middle of New York City!

For all those who have expressed their desire for a copy of the VH1 recording of Madstock III, there are details relating to a possible solution to the problem of me not being able to get many tapes copied at a time.

Anyway, enough of me, enough of me, tell me something about yourself. This is called SHUTTUP!!!

Stay Nutty!

Robert.
— Suggs’ 6:06 Radio Show —

Here’s a little snippet from the regular Madness gossip hunter Christopher Byrne. Take it away Chris…

Hi everyone,

Just found out that Suggs is to host a radio show on Chelsea FC’s radio station. The station only broadcasts on Chelsea’s home games on AM and I *think* in a local area to the ground (although I am not 100% on that one). It is called Suggs’ 6:06 show and is a phone-in about that afternoons home Chelsea game. I can’t remember the actual frequency but if anyone wants it let us know and I will post again.

There are slightly more details about the radio station in this weeks Melody Maker. You don’t know how hard that was to type in coming from a West Ham fan;)

Also in this weeks Melody Maker there was an interview with No Doubt (sorry). The interviewer called Suggs for a quote on them but apparently he is “busy doing a bunch of things”.

— Madmeet Dummy Run —— Saturday 1st March 1997 —

Hiya all,

I’ve just returned from the “Madmeet Dummy Run” with Richard, Nathan, Susan and her sister Erin and can say that it was a great success and I’m pretty sure we all enjoyed ourselves.

The meeting point was outside Camden Town tube station and we didn’t have any problems meeting up.

First stop on our mini meet was “Holts Shoe Shop” where we wandered in and looked at the huge Madness posters that had been signed by visiting Madsters. We were going to sign the poster but the shop assistant said that we had to buy some DM’s to do that. He then said “These shoes were good enough for Madness, don’t you think you should buy a pair”.

We quickly made our exit and walked next door to “Rock on”, the shop where Lee nicks a record from in the Take it or Leave it video. There I bought a 12″ of “Tommorow’s Just Another Day”.

Once we’d looked there we went to Camden Lock and then onto Chalk Farm station to get our pictures taken in “Absolutely” style.

After that we climbed up to Primrose Hill for more pictures and a look at the view.

The time was around 1pm and we were getting hungry so we wandered back into Camden and after asking directions we ended up in the Spread Eagle pub where we had a few beers and a meal.

Finally it was off to Tottenham Court Road and Oxford street where the girls picked up CD’s of all the Madness albums that they had at home on vinyl and Nathan bought “Mad Not Mad” on CD.

The meet was superb with just 5 of us. God only knows what it’ll be like with 20 Madsters in London!!!

Suggs in Another Re-mix Shocker!!

Well, it seems like old Graham is still keen on producing remixes of just about any song. His most remix was that of “House of Fun” on BBC TV’s Comic Relief program.

I’ll let others who saw it explain from here…

“Just heard Suggs singing House of fun live from the Shepard Bush Empire as part of a Comic Relief concert.

I thought it made a nice change to hear it sung in a more raved up background.

I doubt very much however that this will be a Suggs release as a previous message said. Most fans of the old stuff would say it’s a crappy remix.”

JONZ

Others such as Pete Gardner and Ed from Manchester were less than amused and wanted to know what the heck Graham thought he was playing at by ruining a truly wonderful song.

Pete referred to it as a travisty whilst Ed just gave it a general slagging off!

— Madstock III Video’s —

All those who have E-mailed me in the past few weeks or so asking if I can tape them copies of the Madstock III video that was shown on MTV last year will be pleased to know that I am currently sorting out some arrangements with Tony Oxley with regards to reeling off a number of tapes for any interested people.

I’ll post more information to the group as soon as I get it.

— The London Madmeet —

Well, not long to go now until the UK Madmeet in Camden Town. It doesn’t seem that long since the whole thing was a mere suggestion between a number of us Maddies here on the list. Anyway, enough of my waffling, here are the details:

DATE: 19th April 1997

TIME: 11:30am (ish)

LOCATION: Outside Camden Town Tube Station. I’ve had a number of people mail me saying “But there are two exits out of Camden Station, which one shall we meet by?”. So, to end any confusion, the exit/entrance we will meet outside is the one on the RIGHT HAND SIDE as you come up the escalators from the tube platform.

WHAT’S PLANNED: There’s nothing concrete as no doubt we’ll just end up doing what the majority agree on. A few possibilities include lunch in “The Spread Eagle” pub, trecking up to “Primrose Hill”, a visit to “Holts Shoe Shop” and even “Rock On!” if they’re still in business by the time we get there! Ironic really, Rock On stays in business all these years, but as soon as we arrange a meet they blummin well close before we get there – typical!

— The New York Madmeet —

To coincide with the UK Madmeet, the New York Madmeet will also be held on Saturday 19th April.

DATE: Saturday 19th April

TIME: 12:00 Noon, Eastern Standard Time.

LOCATION: The Funfair on Coney Island. At the enterance to the subway station at the end of the run of TRAIN LETTERED “E”.

WHAT’S PLANNED: Drinking, singing and talking!

WHO’S COMING: So far, eight Maddies has put their names down for Mad rendezvous in New York.

James Clauser is the man responsible for all the organisation for this little meet-up, so if you have any questions or you’d like to let him know you’re coming, please E-mail him at: jclauser@303.spacelab.net and he’ll give you all the details you need.

— Mailing List T-shirts —

Well, the demand for mailing list t-shirts does seem to be there. Currently I have around 25 requests for t-shirts of varying sizes on my harddrive but I could do with more.

The t-shirt will have artwork of some sort on the front, whilst the back of the t-shirt will have a list of Madness web sites, site URL’s and possibly e-mail addresses of the site maintainers. At present the t-shirts will be white and shortsleeved but with the more orders we get the more chance there is that we can afford some sort of variety in the t-shirts with regards to colour and style (long sleveed).

The t-shirts will cost approximately 10 UK pounds/7.50 US dollars and postage will vary depending where in the world you live. At a guess I would say that to cover everything, UK Maddies will want to be looking at around 12-13 pounds for the t-shirt, packaging and delivery.

If you’re interested in purchasing this item of Mad gear then please e-mail me at robert@jabba.demon.co.uk with your name, e-mail address, quantity of t-shirts desired and sizes. If, on the other hand you think you can be of assistance with regards to the artwork side of things then get in touch with Dave at: dubpoet@as.net

— Thankyou, goodnight —

Well, that’s your lot for another month. Next month should see a review of both the UK and US Madmeet’s. So, if you weren’t able to make either of the meet-up’s you’ll still be able to catch up with what happened on that remarkable day!

Until then, we’ve got a few more weeks of very little postings to the list due to the fact that most of the UK Maddies who are subscribed via their uni accounts are at home sponging off the parents – and why not!

Stay nutty,

Robert
