MIS ONLINE – The Madness Information Service Online Newsletter
Issue Number: 740 – Sunday 14th July to Saturday 20th July 2013
Web: www.mis-online.net | Twitter: @MIS_Online

Hello, good evening and welcome to this week’s edition of the MIS Online Newsletter.

We start off with some vinyl news, and if you’re on Facebook you may have already spotted people posting up photos of their Benevolence of Sister Mary Ignatius LPs, which must have landed on their doormats over the past few days.

The Lee Thompson Ska Orchestra aren’t the only ones to have finally got their vinyl into the hands of fans, as this week Maddies started to receive their Madness vinyl re-issues.

If you’ve placed an order for any of these releases and are still waiting to get them in your dirty mits, expect them to arrive shortly.

Now, on with the issue.

One Step Beyond Carlisle, by Daren West

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYYIRfQ_gJQ

It’s Saturday the 6th of July and The Lee Thompson Ska Orchestra are playing at the Godiva Festival mid afternoon. As we pass Coventry on the motorway late morning en route to Carlisle to see Madness I can’t help but think “Is Lee gonna play tonight? Will Bedders also be appearing for the LTSO? And if so, will he also be at Carlisle? And if they intend doing both gigs, what plans are in place if they don’t make it on time?”  Perhaps those fans we later see at Carlisle armed with inflatable guitars and saxes are hoping for a call up?!!

I needn’t have fretted as both Lee + Mark are in place as Madness get ready to entertain us all. The stage is placed inside the race track itself and we make our way on the flat turf stage right, having earlier met up with a group of friends we know who have travelled from relatively nearby Morecambe.

Suggs kicks off the gig by announcing “For those of you here for the launch of the One Direction perfume, you are at the wrong show!” before leaping into One Step Beyond. He also acknowledges last years cancelled Carlisle concert “We should have been here a year ago today”.

Madness are in cracking form and now the ‘tour muscles’ are firmly in place the band have upped the ante yet again. The crowd sing along throughout, even to all the new songs and it’s a superb atmosphere. Never Knew Your Name, How Can I Tell You and Leon all particularly sound great tonight. When Misery gets played a young lad perhaps only 6 or 7 years old is on his parents shoulders, dressed in Madness gear topped with a pork pie hat and has grabbed the attention of all us in that area of the crowd. This Nutty Kid aka ‘mini Suggs’ sings the entire song not fluffing a single line! You just can’t knock good parenting!

Suggs (the real one) later randomly starts singing “Oh I do like to be beside the seaside” and I don’t think anyone cares that Carlisle clearly has no beach!

Later still Suggs proclaims “Chrissy Boy grazed his knee so can’t be here tonight”. We are then formally introduced to Kevin Burdett on guitar; so in fact we are up to 3 of LTSO playing tonight for Madness. Kevin ably steps in seamlessly for Chris – he’s a decent guitarist and one or two guitar solo’s showcases his talent, particularly on Shut Up + Grey Day. No Chrissy Boy, so no Showtime. It matters not when you can dip in to a back catalogue that includes great pop songs like Wings Of A Dove + Our House. It’s another superb gig and Madness have again playing brilliantly.

As I Ieave Carlisle mid-morning on Sunday my thoughts turn to those fortunate enough to be seeing them overseas as Madness take the tour to France, you lucky souls. Qui Qui, indeed.

CHAS SMASH

“We’ve been having a pretty darn tootin time here in France. We played in a Roman amphitheatre in Lyon which was such a beautiful setting. It really lifts the spirits when you play some where special. Im a big fan of ancient history so loved touching Roman columns….the tales they could tell?

more soon”

“I have had a most interesting day, a good lunch with Mike, Suggs, Trigger, Steve and Nabil the driver, a hearty conversation where we discussed the state of the world, and how sadly the few (the privileged class) have lost touch with the idea of their responsibility of privilege to the many…then on to Toulouse where I had a great natter with Suggs…then a dash to an osteopath to sort out my back pain, the osteo Julie is about to have her first child, due in November, she was a very gentle soul and her mammy Claudine was there translating. What a brilliant experience to be sorted out, relieved of pain and enjoy the company of confident, happy & intelligent humans, both possessed beautiful characters….then a dash back to the square where I had left Suggs and joy of joys there was Thommo..more chatty chatty and then to the hotel and a relaxing time at the table having a snack with Zowie our wardrobe lady, Phil our drum tech, Jim our main man and good brother in heart and Mr Thompson joined us. Suggs had gone to bed..and then after a little more chatty chatty all went to bed…well not really I walked back to the square with a glass of red..well it’s our day off so I decided to have a glass or two and man o man the front of this very stately building was getting the same treatment that The Palace got when we played the jubilee for HRH…amazing images projected on the front of the building and of course I had to film it…what a sight……and with that good people…its goodnight, god bless and au revoir x”

WOODY

What has been the funniest thing that’s happened 2 either u or any of the other guys while on stage performing?

“Chrissy Boy’s Show Time.”   Woody.

MARK

“Adieu Toulouse, bonjour Nantes puis retour à Londres demain.

Grand concert à Lyon – Aujourd’hui, nous allons à Angeles sur Mer près de Perpignan.

Went to Beck’s Song Reader night at the Barbican. A cast of 1000s. Beautifully put together evening and some fantastic interpretations.”

I REMEMBER WAY BACK WHEN

This week, MIS co-editor Rob Hazelby, goes back 5 years to issue 480, and the week of Sunday 13th July to Saturday 19th July 2008, and then back 10 years to issue 218 and the week of Sunday 13th July Saturday 12th July June 2003.

5 years ago…

Issue 479 – Sunday 6th July to Saturday 12th July 2008

We got this issue underway with a report from Jonathan and Mikel Echeberria Munagorri, who had both managed to meet the band when the group flew to Spain for a rather special performance.

Next-up, and it was back to more familiar territory as we reported that The Camden Cowboys would be performing at The Event, an, umm, event held annually by the local council of Bermondsey.

Chas and Dave were a firm favourite round these parts, but on one particular evening recently a brand new line up of the Camden Cowboys for this event brought the first live taste of Dance Brigade and some Crunch, Madness and Dury songs.

Moving on, and it was straight into reviews as we featured a lengthy article from The Glasgow Herald, who reported on the Our House Musical. Speaking of the new tour Suggs commented at the time;

“We wanted to keep the West End feel of the show, but there were still things we had to change to take it on tour. So it had to be re-written slightly, but there’s still a car onstage and everything. It’s not like we’re doing it on the cheap.”

It was off to “Madness in Print” next, as we listed the latest editions to the online archive site of Madness press articles from down the years. If you had any articles to add to the collection and were happy to type them up you were asked to get sending them in.

Next we went for a gig review, kindly typed-up by Macca of The Nutty Forum. Reviewing the band at the recent Montreux Jazz Festival he rounded off his review by commenting;

“The crowd were fantastic although they didn’t know the new ones (Not even NW5) but that gave me a feel good factor of being one of the very few to sing along!

All in All it was fantastic, great crowd great set despite the mistakes and doing Taller surprised me”

Calling all collectors – a New one track promo title of Norton Folgate was now doing the rounds. Given away in press packs at the recent Hackney Empire shows, a few had since appeared on Ebay, and we gave you a brief lowdown on the release, as well as links to the actions.

It was time to hop across The Channel next, as we gave the heads-up on the plans for a forthcoming Madness tribute album. Organiser Jean-Pierre Boutellier was after two things – bands to cover Embarrassment, Baggy Trousers, It Must Be Love, and tracks from Keep Moving or Mad not Mad, and also a “mighty band” from the UK to put together a special tribute track.

All being well, the album would be out in Spring 2009.

And finally, one of the most exciting things to come from this week’s MIS was an update from the one and only Chrissy Boy, informing us that Julian Temple had been filming the recent Hackney gigs, and that we could expect to see the film on TV in the next couple of months.

10 years ago…

Issue 218 – Sunday 13th July to Saturday 19th July 2003.

Those who went along to last week’s Guildfest couldn’t have failed to notice that the band once again played another ‘greatest hits’ selection, and it seemed that a number of fans were now after a bit of variety. A number of fans commented that what future performances needed was a mixture of singles, but a sprinkling of classic album tracks, too. In a nice twist, Becky Lane kindly passed all comments over to Lee Thompson. Lee even replied, with a short;

“I’ve passed this on to the responsible parties”

Whilst some people grumbled, there were also one or two very happy fans indeed. Andy Thomas sent in an excellent review, complete with photos, and declared that it was “A bloody marvellous weekend”.

Seeing as it was 21 years since the release of the wonderful House of Fun, the Madness Weekender was back, and would this time be held at the one and only Great Yarmouth.

As before, the weekend would be organised by Chris and Cheryl, but now with some extra help from Vince Carden. All profits would go to the CancerBACUP charity.

This coming week saw Radio 2 feature It Must be Love as their Sold on Song feature.

Views on the song were submitted by Dave Robinson, Mike Barson, Labi Siffre and Richard Allinson, along with a whole host of background info about this much-loved track.

Andy Thomas had been a busy boy this week. Not only did he find time to attend and review Guildfest, but he’d also managed to get along and see Los Palmas 6 in Bristol, and knock up a review for that, too!

SIGN OF THE TIMES

More Than 9,000 at Carlisle Gig at Carlisle Racecourse

Richard Clements, the racecourse’s general manager, said: “It was an absolutely amazing night. Things couldn’t have gone better.

“We had some great racing, including a photo-finish in the first race, and then Madness were just brilliant. The crowd loved them.

“Of course the good weather helped, especially after last year. It was just lovely to see the racecourse with so many people here enjoying themselves. That is what Carlisle Racecourse is all about.”

TIME…

We’re almost done for this week, but before we go we do have a few last minute bits to pass in your general direction.

First-up, and Lee Thompson has been in touch to let us know that the web site for his band, The Lee Thompson Ska Orchestra, is up, but currently in a state of construction. There’s very little on there at the moment, but be sure to bookmark http://www.ltso.com

And finally, Mad Not Mad fanzine editor, Ian Taylor, has been in touch to tell us that the latest issue of the zine is ready to go out to subscribers. We hope to get our hands on a copy shortly, but in the meantime Ian’s been kind enough to give us a brief overview of the contents;

“[There’s] lots of Madness in this one, even a couple of anecdotes from The Lambrettas about joining the boys on tour in 1980.

The zine is a fiver for 74 pages”

If you thought £5 for 74 pages was good value, then you’ll be even more interested in getting hold of a copy when you learn that Alan Perry of Too Many Cooks has allowed Ian to give away a covermounted CD of their latest album with each copy of the zine.

An in-depth review and ordering details will appear in a future issue.

Right, with that done we’re off to the paddling pool to cool our feet off! Have a good week,

Simon RobertsJon YoungLiz HazelbyRob Hazelby
