Hello, and a very warm autumnal welcome to this week’s edition of the MIS Online Bulletin.

The big news this week is that the band are hoping to film an alternative video version of the legendary “Our House”, featuring the band and the fans.

The filming will take place at the Ally Pally at 2:00pm this coming Saturday (28th September). All you need to do is turn up on time and wear bright colours. Naturally, you’ll need to be a ticket holder to the gig and will need to know the words.

The filming will take approximately 2 hours and the bar at the palace will be opened when finished.

The MIS team will be going along to the filming, but don’t forget that from 11:30am we’ll be at the legendary Dublin Castle for the Magic Madmeet. Here we’ll have a full playback of the Magic Brothers debut album, along with band members unveiling their T-shirt line.

More information on the Magic Madmeet can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/230333307110466

We’ll also be Mad-Meeting in Barnet the following day (29th). Lee Thompson’s odd job men?

Enjoy the read,

Jon Young, Liz Hazelby, Rob Hazelby, Simon Roberts

“Gladness, Gladness I Call It Gladness Beer” – Prince Tusker

This week, on his return from gigging in France, Mark Bedford sat down and deliberated for us over a list of 15 Elephant Names we had short listed for consideration from a herd of suggestions you readers sent in.

My name is PRINCE TUSKER. Said the proud balancing Elephant on the bottle, announcing the news to the world that he now has a name.

Congratulations to Paul Bridges from Glad-Morgan (sort of) in Wales, whose name won from a draw or people who had submitted that choice of name.

Paul has won free beer and the Gladness T-shirt signed by Suggs, Chas, Woody and Bedders.

There was also an unofficial nickname,  “Luggs”,  no doubt chosen by the Elephant by sticking his trunk in a book of Jazz Elephants.

“I like it, but shouldn’t it be GLuggs?” Said Mark amusingly in his final decision speech, but settling on Prince Tusker as the winning name.

Some Runners up have also been notified and sent a little something, too.

We’d like to thanks everyone for sending in the name, in what was our most amusing competition to date. There were lost of great sounding pet like names, some matching song references and such, like Buster, Fezzy, Nutty, New Delhi Nellie, Leon and such. Some Elephant sounding names like Jumbo, Nelly or even  “Hiccup” inspired by Dumbo. There were some awfully good puns like  “Anne Castle” and “India Room” and some elaborate long names like Marcel Qtip Peabody, Ellesvesent Hopbrium and Lords Chuggington Drinks a lot the 7th.

We laughed the most at things like Drunk Trunk. Suggestions like Trumpo sounded too much like the beer might give you farts so were avoided!

And The entrant who suggested because it was an Indian elephant we should call it Africa.

But hey you, don’t drink that drink this, Prince Tusker. The head of the herd is calling.  “Gladness, Gladness I call it gladness” – Prince Tusker.

I REMEMBER WAY BACK WHEN

This week, MIS co-editor Rob Hazelby, goes back 5 years to issue 490, and the week of Sunday 21st September to Saturday 27th September 2008, and then back 10 years to issue 228 and the week of Sunday 21st September to Saturday 27th September 2003.

Issue 490 – Sunday 21st September to Saturday 27th September 2008

In this packed issue we listed the final 10 tracks in this year’s Madchart countdown. Being the cruel people we are we split these into three articles, with positions 10 to 6 in one article, 5 and 4 in another, and a final article detailing the top three.

So, what were the final three tracks? In the number 3 slot (previously number 7) was The Sun and The Rain, in the number 2 slot was Baggy Trousers (previously number 3), and in the top spot at number 1 was Embarrassment, which retained it’s previous number 1 spot.

Paul Muscat commented at the time;

“’Embarrassment’, released on November 22, 1980, was the band’s sixth single in a little over 14 months, and made its bow at UK #31, following that up with a run of  12-4-4-6-8-8-9-13-28-38-68, for yet another 11 weeks in the Top 40  out of 12 weeks in the Top 75.”

Non Madchart articles this week included a transcript of an interview with Lee Thompson, which originally appeared in the Butlins magazine. In the interview Lee spoke about other bands he’d been in, how Madness formed, ska music in general, who he was most proud of working with, and much more besides. A really interesting interview.

Next it was over to Lee Hookway and Looby, who reviewed the recent Dance Brigade gig at the 100 Club. The write-up was huge, and for those of us unable to get along to the event it really helped to detail just what we’d missed.

With several video cameras present at the 100 Club gig we also featured a list of video clips from the night that you could view with a simple click on one of the many URLs we presented you with. Not only that, but there were also links to a mass of photos taken during the course of the evening.

We finished this issue on a non Madness related note as we urged you to vote for Remember The Eighties.com in the BT Digital Music Awards in the best unofficial music web site category. Rich, the owner of the site always gave Madness massive promotion as and when he could, so we urged you to help him out by placing your vote.

Issue 228 – Sunday 21st September to Saturday 27th September 2003.

We started putting this issue of the MIS together at the start of the weekend, and after looking at how quiet the various Madness related net forums had been, we didn’t mind admitting that we were worried that this would be one small issue indeed.

However, for one reason or another items started to come in thick and fast. In fact, we’ve received so much material, that some of it had to be kept back until the following week. Naturally, all time sensitive items were posted in this issue, as they just couldn’t wait.

With the Madness Weekender a mere 5 days away, organiser Vince Carden decided it was time for contact details to be sent out to those making the treck to Great Yarmouth. For those suddenly deciding they wanted to join in the fro-licks, it was unfortunately too late to sign-up.

Ok, so it wasn’t Madness, but we know it would be of interest to many subscribers. So, when Chris Wardell contacted us with the lowdown on the latest release from Bad Manners, entitled ‘Stupidity’, we thought it only right that the MIS readership receive a heads-up.

Warrior Clothing is an outlet popular with Maddies, and with their web site receiving a complete revamp over the past week or so, we felt it only right that our readers should know about it.

We finished off this week’s issue with a massive list of all the known official and fan created Madness and Madness related web sites we knew of. How many of those are still going today? Probably very few indeed.

APPELPOP (including MADNESS, September 14th, 2013, Tiel, The Netherlands)

AN AWESOME ADVENTURE…

Yes, it was there, finally…September 14th, the date where I looked towards to since several months…Several months?!? No, to be preciously 33(!) years of patiently waiting should be rewarded at last…Woody has this all arranged for me…I will write down now what my adventures were the day before and this particular day…

At Friday night 8.00pm I drove from Haarlem…firstly I had picked up my daughter and we went to Erichem -a little village only 4 miles from the Festival terraine- where my parents live…We were planning to go to the gigs at friday night of Golden Earring and some other bands, but we didn’t as we were tired…So, we stayed at my parents and planned to turn in early, as tomorrow should be a very long day…But it was a disaster, I just couldn’t get to sleep, I saw the whole day which was about to come, playing like a film in front of me…I had to pee quite a lot during the night, all nerves…I never had that before in my life…48 years old, I felt like that little Wollie from 1980, a 15 year old jumping around in a gift shop…

The next day -GD (Gig Day)- like 8.00am or so, I awoke…

I looked outside and it was pouring from hell…now what…? My suit wasn’t prepared for this kind of weather…grrrr…I didn’t have a poncho, an umbrella wasn’t allowed at the gig ’cause it would be seen as a weapon…now what…?!? Tiel was closed down the whole day, because of the arrival of some 7 blokes from England…

No one could go in or out of the town…Tiel was expecting around 160,000 attenders (music lovers)…All roads were blocked towards the festival…

Meanwile the weather became worse as the clock ticked on…I needed to have a poncho, so I WhatsApped Rob, my old schoolmate and his girlfriend Ingrid who were also coming as guests, just like my daughter Demi. We were planning to leave for the festival around 3.00pm…Rob checked ‘Buienradar’…a Dutch site where you can see the weather forecast and told me that it would become better after 3.00pm…So, we waited for better weather to hit the road…It was nearly 3.00pm when Demi and I left my parents’ house…Dad would bring us to a farmer’s land, which the organisation has turned into a huge parkinglot…As we arrived, I saw Rob and Ingrid already waiting for us…So, we said goodbye to dad and left the car…We needed to buy a ticket for the bus, which dropped us off at 200 meters from the festival terraine…

I was nervous when I stepped out of the bus, ’cause I wondered if we really could come backstage…Well Woody had this all arranged, so it has to be settled…

With the 4 of us, we entered the gate, which was the entrance to the BACKSTAGE area…I needed to explain who we were ofcourse and called my name…BENNNGGG…we were on the list!!! But we had to announce ourselves at Security, one cabin further at the left…It seemed that the night before at 3.30am, the MADNESS’ management did sent an email to the organisation of Appelpop, where I was listed as MADNESS VIP guest + 3…What…?!?…VIP guest…?!? ‘No, you got the wrong email, that’s not for me’, I defended myself. One of the Security officers took the email and showed it…I was blast…MADNESS VIP guest + 3!!! I had to take a pic of it, as I could hardly believe it! I looked at the others, at first to my daughter, then to Rob and Ingrid…this was not happening, I was dreaming! But it was really there!!! MADNESS VIP guest + 3, I repeated myself over and over again!

We all became a light grey wristband, which allowed us to get to the VIP Café…What was happening…? But there was more to come…we could come very close to the artistst themselves and their cabins, as well to all stages…Actually we were seen as the artists themselves as they were wearing the same coloured wristbands! Un-be-lie-va-ble! This wasn’t what I expected at all! I only thought backstage -which should’ve been fantastic ofcourse- during the gig and that was all! But no…This was what VIP guest meant!

We had to celebrate this, so we went for an ‘icecold glacier’ to the VIP café, where I ‘ordered’ 4 of them, keeping my wallet ready…Then I saw all the tablets with beer, wine and softdrinks on it…Loaded, people taking off all glasses! I realised it was for free! The whole day and 8 food tickets! My oh my…what was happening?!?

Well, I first needed my beer now to drink away the exciting! What would bring the day further on…? I really wasn’t aware, I have never been to a gig like this size, so what could I expect, I just didn’t know! My daughter’s friends, who were also at the festival, were Apping her where she was…So she left to see some other bands like ‘Therapy’, also from the UK…In the meantime BLOF (Famous Dutch band, singing Dutch) was playing at the headstage in the huge tent, just in opposite of the VIP Café…Ingrid likes this, so she and Rob went to see that…I was alone for a while, dreaming about what was to come…I looked around and saw people staring at me, thinking that I was one of the band’s members, as I was dressed like in the early days of the band, complete with 5 badges, who were especially sent by James Fairgrieve, a real close chat friend…The clock was ticking on…only a few more hours and they all would show up around this area…My nerves became vibes…they were on their way to Applepop…I could almost smell them…what a feeling…AWESOME!!!

It must have been around 6 o’clock, that I became that curious about their ETA, that I spoke to the boss of the Productions Team…He told me that they were landed at the airport of Rotterdam and that they were in their hotel! Having dinner I guessed…The time went slow now…I became nervous ’cause it wouldn’t take that long anymore now…I was right…patiently waiting I saw movement around the gate area around 7.45pm…I didn’t notice directly, but there was Lee as first…So I called his name twice, before he stopped and looked backwards…I was at his side directly, welcoming him to The Netherlands and Applepop, asked if he had a good flight, but also explaining who I was and why I was there…So, I told him that I was Wollie and on Woody’s guestlist…He was answering…’Yeah Wollie, I have heard from you, Woody has told a little…Nice to meet you up!’ I told him that I never have had the oppertunity to see them LIVE, so I was real exited to see him for the very first time in my life and that closeby! Most of the time he had to laugh about me, as I laughed about him…What a clown! I also said to him that I have received his album of LTSO, sent by Geoff Wilson, another close chatmate…Lee grabbed in his pockets and took out 2 badges…’Here you are!’ he said…Really, I did not know what was happening!

Well, I wished him a good gig and would see him backstage…My daughter wished him as well a good gig with the words…’Break a leg!’ Lee was surprised by that saying and looked backwards in laughter, shaked his head and got to into the huge tent, probably investigating the stage

I was planning to go to the area around their cabins, as we founded out earlier that day where they would change their clothes…

There I bumped into Chris, as he just stepped outside of one of the cabins…I called him and he came to me, introduced myself and also explaining why I was there…He seemed to be informed as well…Woody has done a real great job here…The first thing he said to me was: ‘I like your outfit, good taste!’ I had been shopping the last couples of weeks for clothes to be a real ‘Rude Boy’…I succeeded, I knew this before although it was sad I didn’t take the hat of my grandfather with me, that STANTON of 85 years old…That would have finished off my total clothing! But it was pouring down earlier the day, and I was afraid that somebody would grab it, decided me to leave it at home…But in the meantime I had bought myself a Fez, put it on Chris’ head and made a pic! He also said something about AC/DC…’You know the song ‘Highway To Hell’? I will sing that song!’…I didn’t get his point completely and answered…’Yes, one of the bandmembers used to live in Holland as well, like Mike did’…But it was nearly the gig, so he had to change and went into the cabin.

And then, finally, they were there…Woody, Suggs and Chas and at the back Barso…

I didn’t notice Woody at first sight, he just caught me by saying from a distance from about 20 meters…’Hey Wallie!’

My daughter looked at me and said…’Dad how come that an artist is greeting you?’ ‘Well, I don’t know, I answered…Woody is just a descent gentleman!’

So he came to me as well and in the confusing, Suggs and Barso walked along and must have gone into their cabin…Chas and Woody stopped so I introduced myself to them and to Demi, Rob and Ingrid…Woody is a real gentleman and interested in his fans, I could feel that by his way of looking…I also took Chas by the hand and said to both of them…’I have been patiently waiting for 33 years for this very moment and will be rewarded finally, but that it would have been like this I never expected…On behalf of me and my daughter as well as Rob and Ingrid, I would like to thank you so very much Woody!’

They both smiled and didn’t really know what to say…I must have smashed them with my words! But oh, how I meant it…

I asked him if it was possible to meet them all after the gig and Woody agreed…Then they left for their changing of clothes…

It was only half an hour before gig time, when I spotted Barso, walking to the other stage…

He came into my direction and stopped just a little aside of the cabins, walked on a little and then turned around and looked at me…I approached him…

‘Good evening Mike, I am Wollie a FB friend, you answered me a couple of weeks ago in Dutch when you added me to your list, remember…?’

He had to think for a moment and a little laugh appeared…’Yes yes, I can remember now…’ A very modest man, even shy, but very friendly…So I asked him if it was possible to take a pic of both of us…That was OK…I wished him a good gig and he left also for changing his clothes…

The gig was about to begin, but as I didn’t know what was about to happen, the Production leader stepped forward to us and asked us to leave the cabin area…I was afraid now that I annoyed the band and kept distance for the very first time…but we had to listen to him so we left…

A little coach pulled backwards, stopped and the bandmembers got in, one by one…I could see it perfecty from a distance of 70 meters…The little coach came into my direction and stopped at the side of the huge tent…All members got out and entered the artist entrance…After they were inside, it was our turn…We were with a total of 20 persons I guess, when we entered the stairs…In the meantime there was the soundcheck, which only last a couple of minutes…Then suddenly at 9.35pm…

‘Hey you…!!!’

It was there…The gig has begun…What a VIBE!!!

At the very first words of Chas, we were allowed to go backstage…That was at about a distance from 10-15 meters besides of them, behind a vence…I took some pics and left, ’cause I wanted to see them upfront, not at their backs…yes, that is the true definition of backstage. I went downstairs with all of us, and ended up in the ‘bufferzone’, just real close to the stage…It was banging, people flipped and my mouth was open all the time…How awesome! I can’t even remember what they played for songs, as I was more interested in the persons and their performance…What a show!

‘Mr. Cool’ is a very descent man, just doing his thing where he’s good at…singing! But doing a LIVE show, with this kind of voice as he still has…AWESOME!!

Chas has also a good voice and what I saw from this short distance, is that the two of them complete eachother.

I was aware of ‘Kix’s sax-skills, but did not know that he was a backing vocalist! Suddenly he appeared upfront the stage and waved at me…I had to come closer to him…He was pointing at my Fez, which I earlier bought that afternoon…So, he kneeled down and bend over to get my Fez…He took off his and we exchanged our Fez’s…The crowd in my back went totally crazy! He had written someting on it…’Hello Rotterdam’ and his signature…PROUD!!!

But ‘El Thommo’, you were all in Tiel! I assume their plane landed at Rotterdam! Hahaha…this is what I mean!

Then he went lying on his back playing the sax…He also lifted his shirt and grabbed his belly…What a clown!

‘Bedders’ is a marvellous bass player and ‘Chrissie Boy’ an outstanding guitarist, ‘Woody’ is on a very high level with his drumming and our keyboardplayer ‘Barso’ is exceptional…I was amazed to see that this bunch of real close friends have such fun at stage…

The vibe which they bring onto the people is real joy and laughter…No wonder that the crowd is going crazy all the time…

And The Nutterlands loves MADNESS as I know as their greatest fan…

The rest of their gig was fantastic…I can’t remember which songs they played anymore, but I could sing all along…

At the end their closing down act ‘Madness, Madness, they call it Madness/Nightboat to Cairo’, ‘Suggs’ playing with a towel around his head and the beatring on top of it…Then you know it will finish with a BENGGG! And so it was…what an experience to have joined it from that closeby!

From this side of the Northsea I would gladly thank Woody for making this all possible; you’re all such a nice bunch of guys together!

You all have given me a lifetime remembrance, just like my daughter and friends Rob and Ingrid…

Meeting up the band of your life is not given to everyone…I have been a very lucky man to join you all as band!

Thanks Woody, Lee, Suggs, Chris, Chas, Mike and Bedders for an unforgettable night! We’ll meet up another time…

IT WAS AWESOME!!!

Madness Live – Saturday evening, main act at Appelpop 14/9/2013, Holland

The Appelpop festival is a FREE festival in Tiel (in the middle of the ‘fruit region’ in the Netherlands). It has become one of the largest and most popular festivals of the Netherlands. Recent editions of the two day festival were visited by over 150.000 people! Visitors and artists appreciate the unique atmosphere and location of the festival. Appelpop takes place in a beautiful location next to the town centre of Tiel and the river Waal, which is Europe’s most intensively used waterway. The 22nd edition of Appelpop took place on September 13 and 14, 2013.
Madness was this year’s main act.

After ‘One step Beyond’ Suggs gave the Microphone to Barso and Barso welcomed the crowd in Dutch and, in a couple of fluent Dutch sentences, wished everybody a great evening, peace and love… I’d Never experienced that before at any of the at least 10 Madness concerts I have visited locally (in Holland), the audience went wild when he was finished.

As the audience was a very mixed and maybe even a not particularly madness audience I had to say that with especially the big hits Madness had in Holland, the roof went OFF, especially OUR HOUSE – gave me goosebumps as so many people sung it oud loud.

But the ‘new’ song also got a very warm applause and I enjoyed the concert a lot. It was way too crowded to work my way to the front this time.

As an impression I’ve filmed  Nightboat to Cairo;

Madness at Applepop , Saturday 14th September

Saturday Sep 14th Appelpop, with Madness as headlining. Strange after all these years of visiting performances that they come to Tiel, that’s 10km away from where I live. So, saturday on the bike, and happy despite poor forecasts, dry weather, arrived in Tiel.

[With] the bike parked [I] walked to the festival where Blof, a Dutch band, played, the tent [which] filled with crowds.

[I tried] to find a place to get [to the] front of the stage. After the last notes of Blof most people go away to have a drink and I managed to get in front to the right of the stage. This [was] already filled with [a] young crowd, [and the] Madness crew were building up the stage. It’s almost there [that] the noise got louder, the intro started – “To be or not to be. Ladies and gentleman we present the greatest show on Earth. Oui oui si si ja ja da da”.

Madness came on stage and yes with Mark. Lee and Chas came to the front of the stage to say hello, [and then went] back, and Chas started with HEY YOU.

The crowd went loose with dancing and jumping. It seemed Lee enjoyed [the gig], with lot of jokes and nutty things, lifted up his shirt and showed his belly, switched his fez with a fan, pretended he was swimming on his back and threw silver glitter confetti over himself, and wanted to pull a girl on stage.

Suggs introduced Mike as a Dutchman and gave [him] the mic to speak some Dutch. Woody [was] introduced as writer of Leon. Chas thanked the audience in Rotterdam. Chris got the mic after Leon for his SHOWTIME moment Highway to Hell from AC/DC with a very enthusiastic reaction of the crowd,at the end when the greatest hits where played the whole place went crazy. What a treat. It was a party, a p, p, p, p, p, party, till Always Look at the Bright Side started.

What a night

YOU DON’T HAVE TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY

Corrected lyrics

You Don’t Have to Hide Your Love Away

All she does is sit alone and wonders where it went wrong
All she has is a photograph of a man who sang he love songs
Lives alone with her memories and her feelings pushed down under
Sits alone in her head all day, but no one cares, nor wonders

You don’t have to hide your love away
You don’t have to hide your love away
You don’t have to hide your love away
You don’t have to hide your love away

Once her house was full of joy, and the streets would ring with laughter
No one lives here anymore, and there’s no one to look after
Pride of passion, war of words, if she could understand how
She could have her time again, she wouldn’t hide her love now

You don’t have to hide your love away
You don’t have to hide your love away
You don’t have to hide your love away
You don’t have to hide your love away

You don’t have to hide your love away
You don’t have to hide your love away
You don’t have to hide your love away
You don’t have to hide your love away

Suggs Sent BBC Bosses Into A Panic by Dressing as Jimmy Saville

(Contact Music, 20th September)

Madness frontman Graham ‘suggs’ Mcpherson sent Bbc producers into a spin last year after arriving for a live performance dressed as disgraced TV presenter Sir Jimmy Savile.

The band was preparing to play on Jools Holland’s music show in October when Suggs stunned executives by showing up sporting leisurewear, huge jewellery and a cigar – all trademarks of the shamed broadcaster.

TWEETS OF A DOVE

Various posts on Twitter, Facebook or official band blogs that have caught our eye over the past week or so…

Carl took the time to comment on the Magic Brothers debut single…

“Nice one Magic Brothers. I enjoyed that x   A pleasure Nick, lovely images, kept my attention and the old melancholia bubbled…perfect….good vibes and best of british x “

Cathal Mo Chroi

I would like to thank all who came along to my first performance and making the day so special. There are many to thank who made the day possible and without whose help it would not have been the magical moment that it was..I have a few things to do and then I will write a more extensive post. Festival No 6. amazing! x

Rotterdam, Appelpop was brilliant. A most excellent and up for it crowd. The full contingent took to the stage and if I may say we smashed it.

When I look across the stage and see the band, my friends and fellow troubadours I get a little misty eyed and feel so blessed that we have such a special and really wonderful thing in Madness. How many bands have been together as long as us with all the original members? Are we unique?

Luxembourg last night was equally special as we had never played here before. I’m not sure why it has taken so long but we made up for it and happiness and that nutty sound did abound…en route to Paris in about 45 minutes and there’s some good friends to see, the French MIS crew, and I will have to purchase some Gitane san filtre……la bonne vie! x

TIME…

That pretty much wraps things up for this week’s issue of the MIS.

There’s just two reminders for those of you heading to London this coming weekend. The Magic Brothers Madmeet kicks off in The Dublin Castle, Camden at 11:30am. Meanwhile, the Our House video filming starts at 2:00pm at the Ally Pally.

Don’t be late!

Until next week, take care,

Simon Roberts, Jon Young, Liz Hazelby, Rob Hazelby
