[1] - THE EDITOR WRITES During the recent fan-led advertising campaign for `Drip Fed Fred`, you may recall a few lines detailing that even the Ministry of Defence building in London's Whitehall had failed to avoid the bill posters of DFF. It looks like the whole escapade was taken in good spirit as no arrests have been made and the person in question will not be spending the rest of his days in Colchester Military Prison! Like `One Step Behind`, top Madness cover band, `Complete Madness` have finally got themselves online and can be contacted at the following address: Complete at madness2000.fsbusiness.co.uk Please feel free to mail them with gig listings, band info, feedback and general chat. Thanks go to Claire Keegan for the info. Some exciting news in from the Total Madness Mailing List's Wee Stoo is that last Sunday night a certain Mr. Smash played 5 songs solo during an acoustic session in a club. Apparently Carl, nervous though he was, thought it went down well. Could this be a sign that he will be following Suggs and taking a stab as a solo artist? Meanwhile, Rob W has been rummaging through the music press and has stumbled across a review of `Drip Fed Fred` in the current issue of `The Melody Maker`. The music paper gave DFF 3 out of 5 and described the excellent `Elysium` as `a masterpiece`. Following the news from Adele Hargreaves last week that `the prospect of Madstock 5 is gleaming`, rumours are now circulating that a pencilled-in date of Sunday 11th June will be the day that Finsbury Park erupts once more into a day full of Madness. The internet Madness fan-base are already (and rightly so) getting excited and some are putting together basic plans! OK, so you've managed to catch one or two of the numerous Madness tribute bands currently doing the rounds and now fancy a little change. Well, you could a lot worse than `The More Specials`, who are as you can probably work out, a Specials tribute band. Juliet of the famous `Ska Mad` reports that the band will be playing at `The Standard` in London on the 18th March and `O'Neils` in Bromley on the 30th. Attention voters! No, this isn't another `Vote For Fred` campaign, but instead, a `Vote For Madness` campaign. Matthias Goessler has recently been scouring the net and tells as that "At the Glastonbury-Website you can vote for the Bands you want to see there. http://www.glastonbury-festival.co.uk/cgi-bin/vote.pl" Apparently, Madness are currently on 9 votes, so if you'd like to add to that number, get connected and get voting! Thanks go to Matthias for the details. Around this time last month, Madness took the unusual step of jetting over to Spain to record a session for future airing on national Spanish television. Well, a few days back the show was finally aired. The majority of the tracks played were the well-known classics like `Baggy Trousers`, `It Must be Love`, whilst the only new tracks to be aired were `Johnny The Horse`, `Lovestruck` and the excellent `Communicator`. Thanks go to Monica Palacin for the info. Remember the Madness competition set many moons ago on the official site where the band were offering us the opportunity of winning some personal goodies from each member by answering a few measly questions? As Simon Roberts points out in a recent E-mail to `The Total Madness Mailing List`, "Surely someone on the list has won at least one of the seven items on the list". Well, he's got a point! As far as I know, nothing has been announced and no winners have yet been notified. If you beg to differ, please get in touch with the details and we'll print them in the next edition of the MIS. Do you recall the famous `We want Lee for our Leader` banner that was painstakingly put together by MIS Online subscriber Jerney and subsequently used by Mr. Thompson in one of the shows? Well, the near legendary Jerney and banner can now be viewed in one of the clips currently available for download on the official Madness site which Lee filmed towards the end of last year. Onto this week's edition of the MIS now, and as usual, there's a really varied selection of articles to rummage though. Steve Saunders has painstakingly typed-up a retro Madness interview from 1985, Complete and Utter Madness have got another one of their massive Madness sales on the go. We have Simon Roberts with details of how you can finally get your chance to obtain the `Lovestruck` and `Drip Fed Fred` videos, and if that wasn't enough, we've got some exciting news on a new tribute band who are currently doing the rounds. And with that, lets get on with the weeks selection of articles. Enjoy! All the best, Robert Hazelby (MIS Online editor) [2] - THE MADDEST GROUP IN THE WORLD? Taken from a 1985 edition of Smash Hits and painstakingly typed-up by MIS Online subscriber, Steve Saunders... After a two year break, Madness return with "the mellowest song" they've ever written. But,wonders Chris Heath, are they still THE MADDEST GROUP IN THE WORLD? Madness have just got back from Germany. They'd been there to promote their first single for nearly 2 years, the sombre "Yesterday's Men", but not quite everything went quite to plan. "All they wanted to know about," fumes Suggs, "was 'nutty ska suits' and 2-Tone." "They kept asking," explains Carl, "'vi haff you chanzed your clothz?'" "We told them the other ones were smelly," says Suggs. Its obvious that Madness fell just a little trapped by their past. Its not surprising - they've got quite a lot to live up to. Before they took their recent break - forced by the departure of their main songwriter Mike Barson and by their move away from Stiff Records and Dave Robinson, (who used to direct their videos and advise them) - they'd had 19 consecutive Top Twenty singles in Britain. And ever since they hit the charts with bands like the Specials and the Beat in the 2-Tone/ska craze of 1981, they'd also firmly established themselves in the public eye as the nutty boys in the pork pie hats who did wacky things all the time and sung cheery bouncy pop songs about schoolish pranks and baggy trousers. Though in fact they'd stopped doing all of these years ago. But as Lee acknowledges "there's a lot of people who want to see us like that still." Nevertheless that's an image they're determined to shake off, which is why they insisted that their 'comeback' single should be "the mellowest song we've ever done", a slow song criticising the belief that things will always 'get better in the long run' without people doing anything about it. Though Suggs insists that "if it hadn't been a hit we wouldn't have jumped out of any windows" they're all clearly relieved that it is. If only because, despite all their successes, they're not very rich - they only were really ever pop stars in Britain and all the money they earnt from that they've invested in their own recording studio. So how are they finding their return to the public eye? "Its difficult," says Lee dryly, " because we keep getting banned from things." He's smarting from their recent Wogan appearance where, because he turned up late, they were told the next morning that they were too "unprofessional" to ever be asked back. "We've always been unprofessional," points out Suggs indignantly. "Its crazy," complains Carl. "Its not as though we're the Sex Pistols or anything." "The trouble is," says Suggs, "that we started with a bad image and its stuck with us - even after a two year break. We keep making plans to be professional and co-operative, but we never are." "Still," he adds, "if we were perfect we'd be boring." One thing that they're all very clear about is that just because they're no longer nutty boys it doesn't mean that they're now miserable sods. In fact they spend nearly the whole time cracking really terrible jokes, taking the mickey out of each other and generally being very cheerful. Though they don't hide a certain amount of concern about how well they can cope without the talents of Mike barson, who left, because he didn't like the pressures of the business, to go and live with his wife in Holland. "We used to have a rough idea about something," explains Lee, " and Mike would be the one to go 'bang!' this is it. There'd be no grey areas. Whereas now everyone's taking more time about things - sometimes too much time - its a bit of a headache with six people trying to agree." So did it take a long time to get used to the fact that Mike was no longer there? "Yeah," says Lee sadly, "It did. Because we'd been hanging out with each other since we were small kids it came as a bit of a knock. It was like loosing me wife. It felt like a brother had gone to another planet or another country. Which he did." "I spoke to him last week actually. He's still writing and recording on his home studio - he said he'd been doing some old Madness stuff - like "One Step Beyond" and "Absolutely"." What for? "That's what I intend to find out. I'm going over to see him." So would you like it if he started writing songs for Madness again? Lee doesn't hesitate. "Very much so. Yes." But for the moment the six remaining members will soldier on, looking forward to the release of their forthcoming LP, "Mad Not Mad", running their record company Zarjazz which employs eight people and has signed up Charm School and Tom Morley, continue paying into their pension fund (" we started one three years ago") and try to get the international success that has . Whatever, they've no intention of giving up. "We've got a few years left in us yet," laughs Carl. "Especially when you see some of the cack in the charts...which we won't mention but they know who they are and I'm sure they don't sleep easy!" At which they all fall about in hysterics. Who does he mean? "I don't want to slag people off," he says, refusing to be drawn. "But," whispers Lee loudly, "they're wearing red Doctor Martens..." LEE "I've got nothing to say. I'm a boring old fart," insists Lee. What is he going on about? "It all started at this fancy dress party," he explains, I went as a Hari Krishna (weird eastern cult which involves shaving your head). I think its this bloody hairstyle that makes me so...bloody boring!" In fact he says that he is quite serious about Hari Krishna - "I'm publicising it" - though he doesn't want to be a member because "they go to bed at 8 and then get up at 11, 2 and 4 to pray...I couldn't do that." He claims he has, however, been to their centre to learn about the cult and says that he doesn't think it "does anyone any harm. And I'd rather advertise Hari Krishna that Dumbo - I mean Rambo." Before this weird phase he'd spent his time away from the band with his wife and two kids ("about once a week we go out with Suggs' family") and trying to sort out the warehouse he's having converted - "one hell of a headache". How does he feel about all these new responsibilities? "I suppose the easy answer is that the more money you've got the more problems you have," he says. "Its probably the kids which keep me and my wife together otherwise I'd probably flip out." CHRIS Its a standing joke with the rest of Madness that guitarist Chris Foreman invented rock 'n' roll. "Invented rock 'n' roll?" he scowls. "No I didn't! They just say that because I'm the oldest (he's 29). They say rude things like that I was in Bill Haleys group. But," he adds proudly, " actually they all look up to me. Especially when I stand on something." Chris was married and divorced years ago (he has a 9 year old son) and now says that "even though the others do a lot of things outside the band, I don't really. I just spend my time trying to write songs." He's disgusted by the idea that his long hair - presently creeping over his shoulders - was inspired by a need to stay fashionable. "I'd hate to be fashionable - its not fashionable, is it?" he says worriedly. " I grew it early this year in competition with Lee. We were both doing quite well until this fancy dress party. I went as Uncle Sam, Suggs as a Hasidic Jew, Carl a Samurai Warrior and Mark in a US army uniform. Lee had just dyed his hair and beard black so we were sure he'd go as Abraham Lincoln. But he cut it off and went as a Hari Krishna. Though," he adds determinedly, "he's still left with one long bit." WOODY So what's Woody been up to the last two years? He scratches his head. "Not a lot. Recently I played tennis." In fact he's spent quite a lot of time with his wife, Jane - its their fifth wedding anniversary in two days time. "Its been really beautiful," he says sincerely. It was Jane who brought him back to reality recently when he became totally obsessed with the technical side of making records and would spend hours upon end programming computers and fiddling with electronic gadgets. "It became like an addiction," he admits. "I became so involved that I was totally detached from the rest of the world. It was awful. Fortunately Jane pulled me out of it and brought me back to earth by giving me a hard time. Which I really appreciated." Woody confesses that his reputation as the quietest, least extrovert member of Madness is still fair enough. "Fair comment," he agrees, a wry smile on his face. " You see, I don't have a natural tendency to dance. I've never danced in my life. People expect that, just because I'm a member of the band. I'll get up and dance - its excruciatingly embarrassing. Though," he adds, "I am extrovert in some ways - I suppose verbally but not in actions. Its just that I'm not often seen being wacky and nutty." MARK "I was only 17 when we made 'The Prince' (their first single)," laughs Mark, the groups youngest member, still trying to work out how it all happened. "We were literally just pushed forward on a big wave - we didn't have much time to think about anything. Looking back at some of the crazy things I used to do in videos I think 'how did they get me to do that?' because really I'm quite inhibited and shy." Still, he regrets none of it though these days he says he's enjoying it "even more". Recently he's been playing on a few other peoples records, going to the theatre and cinema ("all sorts, but not science fiction - its dross, I hate it!") and reading. I just read this book, Elvis: The Novel," he explains. "Its a fictional book about Elvis Presley - in it he invents the cheeseburger, makes a guest appearance on Batman and becomes the Rocket Man Of Memphis." But mainly he's just enjoying making Madness records. "You don't get many groups these days," he reflects, "that play one instrument each and mesh together to make a sound. Its not the current vogue. Its almost regarded as old-fashioned, isn't it?" CARL "A friend said to me recently," says Carl, "that at one time I was the most menacing pop star in England." He doesn't think it was true - "I'm sure there are some real nasties" - but says that at the time he was "full of angst". "I didn't realise what I was like at the time but I can see it now," he admits. "It was all part of what I thought Madness was then - funny and a bit threatening. I used to hang round with Lee and Mike - we'd do loads of silly things that seemed hysterical at the time. We weren't that destructive but we did get into fights, mainly because of the way that we looked. We'd dress exactly the same and go running down the road in double time. It seems very weird now. Like a different person." In those days people weren't even sure what he was doing in the band. "I knew I wanted to be in so I fought to get in there," he remembers, but to start with all he did was shout the odd lyric and do lots of nutty dancing. Since then, though, he's learnt the trumpet and also does quite a lot of songwriting - as well as the band stuff he wrote Feargal Sharkey's "Listen To Your Father". These days he says writing songs and looking forward to having a family are the most important things in his life. SUGGS "We have changed," says Suggs looking back on how Madness used to be when they started. "We're a lot more sensitive now. Its a matter of realising what you want, knowing that there's more to life than going to discos, showing off and being aggressive. You can direct your energy more positively than flying round the world, going bananas and just smashing things up. I'm still just as excited about music as when we started but its just a matter of getting it in perspective. You don't want to wake up in your hotel room three years later and think 'what have I been doing?'." So these days he thinks a lot more about "having friends, having a family, having a garden...that's the real life, not the fantasy." He's got a wife and two daughters and says that one of the best things about the last two years has been the chance to "just sit and think for five minutes". "I left school and had a couple of brief jobs," he explains, " and then I joined the band. I missed out on a lot. So I've been catching up." Still, he did also find time to write quite a lot of Madness' new LP and, with Carl, to mastermind the Fink Brothers record at the beginning of the year. But, he says, "its only being in Madness that inspires me to sing." Complete and Utter Madness http://www.nuttyboys.com [4] - THE MADNESS VIDEO ARCHIVE Are you one of the many who failed to catch the `Lovestruck` and `Drip Fed Fred` videos during their limited airing and are now pining for their dosage of nutty videos? Well, fret no longer. Thanks to the efforts of Simon Roberts, the two videos are merely a mouse click and a download away. Pop along to: www.ntmml.co.uk The `Lovestruck` MPEG weighs in at around 12.1 mb (3:59) whilst `DFF` is a slightly lighter 11.9mb (3:53) Those of you who have to pay for your phone calls may want to think about downloading these videos during the weekend when the call costs are that little bit friendlier. Many thanks to Simon Roberts for the info and links. [5] - LOS PALMAS 6 We formed in Nov 98 and worked very hard to perfect a total Madness set (unlike most of the other tributes, except One Step Behind) we play a wide variety of their songs and perform as close to them as possible i.e. costumes, props, moves, names, everything we can afford to do! We played at the Shepherds Bush Walkabout last week to over 1500 pogoing nutters and after the show the sound engineer told me that he knows Lee and Chrissy Boy and could he take a gig guide? He did, and at our next gig at Yates in Worthing (another packed one. They had to shut the doors by 9pm and operate one out, one in) we were approached by two suited characters who said that they had been sent down to check us out. We have since then been asked to play The Mean Fiddler or Dublin Castle so that Lee etc. can come and see us personally (maybe he'll get up himself). Anyway, were going from strength to strength this year and have secured the Walkabout Chain and Yates's amongst loads of other gigs. We are a six piece totally live band (we couldn't find a trumpet player/singer so I play sax and sing and the lead singer doubles on trumpet). [6] - AND SO, TO BED Thanks go to everyone who contributed to this week's edition of the MIS Online bulletin. Your help and support is really appreciated! As always, I'm on the look-out for material which could be used for future edition's of the MIS, so if you have anything you think may be of interest to Madness fans, please send it my way and I'll be more than happy to put it up for inclusion. If anyone manages to get along to one of the `Los Palmas 6` gigs listed in the section above, please could you knock together a review (make it as long or as short as you want) of the proceedings so that the rest of us can get some idea as to what they're like. Until next week. All the nutty best, Robert Hazelby
