[1] - THE EDITOR WRITES Hello all, Following last week's lean edition of the MIS, you'll be pleased to know that things seem to have changed this week with loads of little bits and pieces of info arriving in my mailbox on an almost daily basis. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this trend continues. Please keep sending the info in and I'll keep printing it! Some of you may recall some mention of a Madness stage show that was currently in the planning stages. Well, things seem to me moving along if this snippet from the Daily Record is anything to go by; "EIGHTIES legends Madness are writing a West End musical based on their hits. Singer Suggs met top script writers to come up with a storyline weaved around the band's hits. But none of the group will appear in the show. A theatrical source said: 'They want to capture the essence of Madness without it being a story about the band. All the hits will be in there". Many thanks to Iain Mason for digging that out. Attention all Radio 2 listeners! Andy Clayden reports that the legendary Suggs will be appearing on Mark Lamarr's Radio 2 show this coming Wednesday at 9pm. For those of you not based in the UK, you should be able to listen to the show via Real Audio. Simply connect to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/ Ashley Moore tells us that the show is entitled `A Beginners Guide to Reggae`. Some none Madness related news now, and Wee Stoo reports that; "On the um.. 10th December, Bad Manners will be packing out The Garage here in mighty Glasgow. Tickets are about a tenner, and you can pick them up in person from Missing Records shops in Glasgow, over the phone or from the web.. www.missing.co.uk. For anyone who might be around, I've heard a whisper that an afternoon of bevvying may be the order of the day. And, with The Garage being one of Glasgows prime studenty cattle markets err i mean clubs, there may well be some after gig entertainment". If you're in the area on the 10th, you'd be mad to miss this one. Thanks go to Stoo for the info. We've some more Radio 2 news now, and it seems that this coming Thursday at 9pm will see the first part of `The Davis Diaries`, hosted by none other than Ray Davis himself. Part one see's the birth of the Kinks, and how they struggled for their initial break. This show will surely be a must for all Kinks fans out there. Many thanks to Ashley Moore for the info. After a long break away from the keyboard the TMML's Clockworkorange returns to life reporting that the latest edition of `Scootering` magazine has a big interview with the legendary Mr. Dammers. For all you Specials fans out there, this looks like something well worth tracking down. Fancy having a look at a new Madness website that's still having the edges smoothed out? If so, Becky Lane and Caz are currently in the processes of putting a new site together, entitled "The Maddie Files". The address is: http://www.geocities.com/pailthelamppost.index.html Please remember that the site is in a very rough state at the moment and has been set up so that Becky and Caz could bounce some ideas around. Still, I'm sure they'd appreciate any feedback you'd care to give, and this can be sent to Becky at: nutty_bex at hotmail.com Some dates for your diaries now. Rob Lythall of VIP Events sent me a mail earlier in the week reminding me that on the 25th and 26th November at Hall Three of The Wembley Exhibition Halls in London, The Wembley Music Fair will be held. This year promises to be huge, with traders coming from as far a field as Brazil, USA, Canada, Croatia and Macedonia joining from all over the UK and Europe. This is the UK's biggest and busiest fair offering you the rare chance to meet everyone in the business under one roof. For more information please visit the www.vip-24.com or email VIP at wembley at vip-24.com Note - their last day in the office is Thursday 24th November. TMML subscriber, Adam Fowler reports that; "There is a new Night Fever advert on TV, which I wouldn't mention except for the fact it made me chuckle. There's a line when they're going on about how great it is, and then Suggs says, "If this doesn't sell...I guess I'll carry on with my day job" or something along those lines. Glad to hear Madness is still his day job and not vice versa!" Many thanks to Adam for the snippet. Last Friday saw the BBC celebrate 21 years of `Children in Need` with its most extravagant show to date. As regular readers of the MIS will no doubt be aware, a special edition of A Question of Sport Meets A Question of Pop was staged. Team captains were Sue Barker (for the Question of Sport Team) and Jamie Theakston (for the Question of Pop) team. The all-famous Suggs was present, but I have no idea how well either of the teams did. Can anyone let us know what went on? I'll print a review in next week's MIS if someone can send in a rundown of events. I'm sure many of you were roped into playing the recorder when you were at school. I know I was, and can't say I enjoyed it that much. However, TMML subscriber Suzie Wilkins says that she is currently teaching her recorder group to play a remixed version of the classic `March of The Gherkins` which she has arranged. Now, if only she could record it and put it online so we can all have a listen. News in from Jim The Copper is that on 14th November, The Daily Mail newspaper had a good picture of Suggs in it's word quiz. One of the questions was "which pop band did Suggs used to sing with??" The answers were something like: a. Madness, b. Duran Duran, c. Dexys As Jim rightly says "What do they mean USED TO SING WITH???" Many thanks to Jim for the news-bite. I know that a number of you have had problems when dealing with certain individuals who sell Madness merchandise via post. Well, following the suggestion a few weeks back that a `Dodgy Dealers` list should be set up to aid the unwary Madness buyer, Wozza has offered to host the list on his Nutty Sounds website. If you would like to add people/companies to this list, please contact Wozza at: paul.wassell at btinternet.com or visit the website at: www.nuttysounds.co.uk Any now, lets get right on to this week's collection of articles. Enjoy the ride! Robert Hazelby (MIS Online Editor) [2] - THE BEST BUZZ OF OUR CAREERS Last Wednesday the 15th Nov saw the Los Palmas 6 headlining a huge charity gig in Brighton. There were 5 bands on the bill with the LP6 finishing the evening. We started our usual set and had the crowd from the first number. When we got to 'Drip Fed Fred' I looked up and this geezer was standing on stage in front of me dancing. My first thought was "where are security" and then I noticed that security was standing on stage next-to our guest with big grins on their faces. I looked closer and who should I see but the main man himself - Mr Lee J Thompson. Wow, pressure!! We finished DFF and the promoter announced to the crowd that Lee from Madness was here, and they went wild. Lee grabbed my sax and the rest of the LP6 started One Step Beyond. Lee was awesome, playing his usual Mad self. He left the stage and we carried on with the gig - all of us aware that we were playing in front of the writer of a lot of our set. We got to our encore of Baggy Trousers and Lee got up again playing Baritone with me, it was the best buzz of our careers so far. After the gig I told Lee that as I had let him play with my band he must return the compliment at the next Madness gig - and he didn't say no! Maybe, just maybe ? Many thanks to Swanny for organising Lee for us. We owe you!! For more info on the LP6 e-mail lospalmas6 at hotmail.com or see our web site at www.lp6.co.uk Steve Turner [3] - ARISE SIR MICHAEL CAINE Actor Michael Caine, who once said he felt an outsider in Britain, receives a knighthood from the Queen at Buckingham Palace on Thursday. The double Oscar-winning star has already been awarded a CBE for his services to the British screen. The honour follows his second Oscar for his 99th film, awarded in March, and a Bafta fellowship, where he used his speech as a platform for his frustrations. He told the audience that he felt like he never really belonged in Britain and that he was a loner and on the outside. But Caine will be embraced as a fully-fledged member of the British establishment on Thursday when he gets his knighthood. He has always made a virtue of his working class background and his accent has resolutely refused to alter in his 40-plus years as an actor. BRITISH ICON Caine was at the vanguard of British movies in the 1960s, playing the anti-hero spy Harry Palmer and the cockney Alfie. In recent years many of his earlier films have been reassessed as true cinema classics. ------- Anyone think a re-mix with the word "sir" inserted is on the cards? Jonathan Young [4] - POSSIBLE ADDITIONS TO THE COLLECTION Calling all fans of Channel Five's `Night Fever` TV show. A new CD album has just been released in UK music stores up and down the country. The album, entitled `Night Fever`, features a photo of the legendary Madness front man on the front cover, whilst the back lists a varied selection of karaoke `classics` for you to sing along to over the forthcoming beer-induced festive period and beyond. Continuing on a CD related theme and Andrew Langmead reports that the Ultimate Band List (www.ubl.com) has the newly released Madness singles album, "Madness - The Ultimate Collection" for sale. UK Maddies can buy the album for $18.94 including delivery, which is approximately £13.50. Andrew says that this is a much better price than you can get it for from any of the UK sites as an import. The album track listing is as follows; 1 ONE STEP BEYOND 2 MY GIRL 3 NIGHT BOAT TO CAIRO 4 BAGGY TROUSERS 5 MADNESS (TWO-TONE SINGLE VERSION) 6 THE PRINCE (TWO-TONE SINGLE VERSION) 7 EMBARRASSMENT 8 THE RETURN OF THE LOS PALMAS 9 HOUSE OF FUN 10 OUR HOUSE 11 IT MUST BE LOVE 12 MADNESS (IS ALL IN THE MIND) 13 GREY DAY 14 TOMORROW'S JUST ANOTHER DAY 15 SHUT UP 16 THE SUN AND THE RAIN 17 MICHAEL CAINE 18 YESTERDAY'S MEN 19 WINGS OF A DOVE (A CELEBRATORY SONG) For more information and a look at the cover artwork, click to: http://www.ubl.com/ and search for `Madness`. I'd known about the 'Los Palmas 6' gig in Brighton on the 15th for quite some time, and seeing as it was a day after my 16th birthday I thought I'd be going along, to celebrate in true Maddie style (of course)... but Caz (my usual partner to LP6 gigs) was unable to make it, I wasn't too keen on going along on my own, so after a while I decided not to go.... until that is I got a text message from the wonderful Swanny asking me if I fancied meeting up to go to this gig along with Thommo (!) after receiving this text message I ran to the phone and phoned Swanns straight away to say that I'd be there!! So, after making arrangements over the phone I was going to meet up with Swanny outside Brighton pier at around 8 - 8:15pm. After a while the great man turned up, and got on the phone to Thommo straight away to find out where he was - Swanny decided that as he wasn't a local and wouldn't have a clue where Thommo meant he handed the phone to me ... so I spoke to Thommo and found out which pub he was in, and I lead us there. We found the pub with no trouble at all, managed to locate Lee, got the drinks in and sat down. I got a 'Hello' kiss off of Lee... very proud..! hehe. We sat and drank, some ate, for about an hour, there were some friends of Thommo along there too. They were such lovely people!! All of a sudden I got a phone call off of someone (who shall remain nameless) who was (I think) shocked to hear me say that I was in a pub with Swanny and Lee... I presume he was shocked as I had to repeat Thommo's name about five times! Still not sure he was believing me or not Thommo asked me if he could speak with him... I hope that made his night :o) After the drinks etc. we went off in search of the venue that LP6 were gonna be at; The Dome, we walked there in the rain (of course what else do you expect in Brighton!?) We arrived and went straight to the bar where we all stood and chatted whilst also listening to the band that were on at the time (a band called Danny Fox and the Soul Miners) and of course we drank - yes including little 16 year old me! haha! As a total surprise to the band (LP6) Thommo was going to get up on stage and play along to 'One Step Beyond' (and had they been able to play it Thommo would've sung along to 'Land of Hope and Glory'). Swanny and I went backstage to accompany Lee up on stage.. and the moment Lee got on stage the whole band were in a daze, their faces were a picture! They just couldn't believe that Thommo was actually there... and playing Steve's sax! Thommo actually wanted to get up on stage and join in to 'Drip Fed Fred' , but for some reason wasn't allowed. After his part we left backstage and went back to the bar, we continued to sing along, but finally I couldn't stand it anymore. I had to have a proper nutty dance (there's not been one time I've been able to sit or stand still when there's Madness playing!!) so i went a bit further out into the audience (just away from the bar - didn't want to leave my drink too far away.. hehe) and then proceeded to have a nutty groove! I was dancing (doing my little Suggs bit) to 'Night Boat' when suddenly I felt someone's foot almost kicking my upper leg, I turned around to see Thommo right behind me, holding his thumbs up at me smiling like mad seemingly impressed by my rubbish Suggsy impression! hehe ... I just carried on till the end. Before they finished Thommo got up on stage to do another song with them. Subsequent to the gig Thommo was completely surrounded by fans wanting autographs, some people (as spotted by Lee) were coming back for more than one signature... Thommo asked one girl if she was going to be flogging them off at school the next day! hahaha! Anyhoo, the band came down and said their thanks to Thommo. They were so over the moon with him being there especially as he went to the trouble to actually get up and play along with them! not many people would do that... only special people!! At about quarter past Twelve (am) we were kicked out of the venue as they were closing, but not before I had the chance to let Thommo know that it had been my 16th birthday on the 14th of Nov, to which he replied, that he remembered being 16 and what a great age it was... I also got a short rendition of 'House Of Fun' ... "16 today and up for fun!!" and what made it better was that I got a birthday kiss off of him! Outside the venue we said our good-byes to quite a few of Lee's friends (whose names now escape me, sorry guys!!) but a couple of us were left, everyone started walking off in twos chatting away, and as luck would have it i happened to be paired with Thommo (!) we just started chatting. I was so amazed at how easy he is to talk to. I mean I've spoken to him before loads of times.. but it seemed different this time.. I dunno it could've just been me.... we were just talking about everything - me staying on at school to do A levels.... Daley Thompson playing the drums... well just everything really! One main thing I can remember asking Lee was why Crunch! never played 'Round Trip' live.... apparently not everyone in the band was too keen on playing it... but they (fingers crossed) may start playing it now....... oh and he agreed that the last Crunch! gig was too short... When we reached Swanny's car we had to say good-bye, I said good-bye to Lee last.... (save best till last... hehe) and I told him how great it was to see him again, and that I can't wait for the next time, we kissed good-bye and I even got a long hug off of him! I was soooo happy!!!! all evening I had a smile on my face! Then after that Swanny very kindly gave me a life home in his car. Thank You sooo much mate!!!! you're the best! Also, THANK YOU so much for inviting me along to the meet up.. you didn't have to.... but you did! I owe you big time mate!!! Thanks of course go to Mr. Lee .J. Thompson too..... for not minding me being there!! I hope somehow you manage to read this. Wey hey... what a way to celebrate a birthday eh!? Oh and thanks to everyone who text me to say 'Happy birthday' it means a lot to me!!! thanks!!!!! Anyhoo I'm really sorry to bore you all so much.. Well, I'm now completely and utterly knackered!!! I only got 3 hours sleep last night.... so I must be off......... Thanks again to Swanns and Thommo!!! Loads of love to everyone! Emma (Madame Barzo) [7] - ANOTHER CLOSED DOOR Thanks go to everyone who contributed to this edition of the MIS. Special thanks must surely go to Emma for her in-depth review of the Los Palmas 6 gig - excellent stuff indeed. As usual, if you have anything you feel would be suitable for inclusion in a future edition of the MIS, please send it to me and I'll be more than happy to include it. This coming week, I will be on holiday from Friday till late on Sunday evening. I don't know what time I'll be getting home yet, so if it's too late, I'll be posting the MIS early on Monday morning. Hope this isn't too much of a problem! Until the next issue. Take care. All the best, Robert Hazelby
