IN THIS ISSUE ... 1 - THE EDITOR WRITES - This weeks news and information in brief. 2 - A PUB CALLED IAN DURY - You may recall a few issues back that a Wizard Inn's were planning to open a new pub in Upminster later this year. Pretty much everything had been decided upon apart from one important thing, the name of the place! 3 - A REALLY NICE GUY - Here's Madness Unsugged editor, Vince Carden with details of what may be appearing in the next Fatboy Slim single and what you may be reading in a future edition of his excellent fanzine... 4 - AUCTION RESULTS - FINAL CALL FOR WINNERS/BIDDERS - Right, thanks to the amazing response I have had regarding who bid how much for which item. The list is 90% complete. There remains about 5 things unaccounted for. I would be most appreciative if the final few items could be sorted out. Simsey reports. 5 - IN SUPPORT - We are proud to present you with the `Madness Unsugged` exclusives. Two tales from members of bands who played support to Madness in the eighties, written especially for the fanzine. First up with his account of those heady days is Chris Bostock of the Jo Boxers followed by Adele Winter of The Friday Club, the last signing to the Two Tone label. 6 - REEF PAY TRIBUTE TO IAN DURY AT GLASTONBURY - While browsing the Glastonbury site on nme.com I perchanced on the following article. Maybe I missed it but I never saw it mentioned on the telly. Kindly typed up by Mr. G. 7 - OFF TO BED, STRAIGHT TO SLEEP - Thanks and closing words. [1] - THE EDITOR WRITES Evening Maddies, I hope everyone is keeping well and enjoying the summer weather. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that it's just not the same without the traditional bi-annual Madstock. I do hope that the fantastic Madstock 4 wasn't the last time we'll see The Magnificent Seven perform in Finsbury Park, but I have a horrible feeling that my worst nightmares are about to become reality. *coughs* Enough of me, enough of me... News from Mikel Echeberria Munagorri is that it seems Madness are becoming a very popular band for providing backing music for Spanish television adverts. A few months back they had `La Caixa` (a savings bank) advertising mortgages with `Our House` and now Bosch are advertising domestic appliances with the same song. The tune is the original we all know and love, but the singer is different. Mikel tells me that "I am now thinking of getting a mortgage in La Caixa to buy a set of new Bosch washing machine and refrigerator!" Many thanks to Mikel for the news. Time to get those blank tapes and video recorders at the ready as TMML subscriber, Jim Neill reports that; "On VH1 Saturday 8th July @ 5.00 pm there will be 2 hours of highlights from Fleadh Festival 2000 - what are the chances of seeing Velvet Ghost?" If anyone manages to catch the program, let us know if the Velvet Ghost gets a look-in. Thanks to Jim for the info. Some festive news now. Yes, I know Christmas is weeks and weeks down the line, but some things are so big that they need this amount of time to organise. Christmas concerts for example. No, don't get your hopes up, because unfortunately, this year no planning and organisation for a Christmas Madness tour will be needed if what the TMML's Wozza has to say is correct; "Some rather disappointing news... There are to be no Xmas gigs from Madness this year, the rumour was confirmed today (1st June). Oh well..." As to who has revealed this news and how has yet to be discovered. As soon as we can bring you any further details we will. Onto something a little jollier now, and Simon Mulvaney tells us that his Madness website is now up and running under the name of `Complete and Utter Divine Madness`, and you can take a look by pointing your browser at: http://www.mulvaneys.freeserve.co.uk If you do pay Simon's site a visit, please drop him some feedback. More Madness news from Mikel Echeberria Munagorri who reports that an unofficial Madness album is currently doing the rounds featuring all the B-sides from the recent single releases (Lovestruck through to Drip Fed Fred) and Money, Money, Money. That's not all though. Mikel also tells me that; "The best thing of this CD is not the songs, which we all know, but the idea of putting them together in one CD, and what really surprised me was the artwork by Luis Cereigido: using the same fonts and the same style as the original Wonderful CD and all the singles' covers, including the promos. He has created a different cover and even a Madness Argentina logo in the same style as the Madness logo. The result is a 10 song CD that looks just as good as the official material. All you collectors had better keep your eyes peeled at forthcoming record fairs. Many thanks to Mikel for the information. Think back to last week's MIS when we mentioned that there was a definite possibility of a TMML football match as part of the Crunch! weekend. Well, all the plans seem to be running along at a right old pace, the only problem is that some people want it on the Friday and some on the Saturday. If you're planning to take part in the football match, please send your preferred day to Graham Hewson at the following address: dripfedgray at yahoo.co.uk so that he can make the relevant arrangements and announcements. And with that, lets get underway with this week's MIS... Enjoy the read! Robert Hazelby (MIS Online Editor) [2] - A PUB CALLED IAN DURY You may recall a few issues back that a Wizard Inn's were planning to open a new pub in Upminster later this year. Pretty much everything had been decided upon apart from one important thing, the name of the place! With that in mind, Wizard Inn's decided to organise a `Name the pub Campaign`. One Ian Dury fan by the name of Bob decided that as this was Ian's old stomping ground, the pub should be named `The Ian Dury`, and why not? Bob asked if we'd be kind enough to get in touch with Wizard Inn's to put down our votes for `The Ian Dury`. MIS Online and TMML subscriber, Emma Southerby was just one of the many people who placed their vote. Emma has kindly passed me on the response she has received... Dear Miss Southerby, Thank you very much for your recent email regarding the suggested name for our forthcoming pub that opens in early September at Corbetts Tey Road, Upminster. The naming of this pub has caused much local positive feedback and we recently ran a campaign in conjunction with the local Residents Association for the name of the pub. An announcement will be made very shortly on the successful winner of that particular competition and in the meantime your entry will be considered along with the others that we received. As Ian Dury was a famous local resident we may also consider a reference to him inside the pub. On a personal note being in my late 30's I am very familiar with Ian Dury and can share your enthusiasm for his music and life. I saw him several times in concert when I lived in Bristol in my youth. Thanks once again for taking the time to write to Wizard Inns. Yours sincerely, Julian Sargeson Operations Director If you've not placed your vote, but would like to, here are the contact details for Wizard Inns; Wizard Inns Ltd 17 Victoria Street St. Albans Hertfordshire AL1 3JJ 01727-792200 The email address is wizard at wizardinns.co.uk Many thanks to Bob and Emma for the details. [3] - A REALLY NICE GUY Here's Madness Unsugged editor, Vince Carden with details of what may be appearing in the next Fatboy Slim single and what you may be reading in a future edition of his excellent fanzine... The night before Rhythmstock in Brixton, the compere Phil Jupitus (every Madness fan's favourite comedian - he of the Christmas tour, TFI Friday, DFF video and "This is your life") was doing a comedy slot in Dublin. I hadn't stalked anybody for a long time (almost weeks!) so I thought I'd pop in and slot a few fanzines backstage before the gig especially as he is a real fan and was on page two of the current issue in full gloss. Anyway, he popped out before the gig and said thanks. I got talking to him at the break and he was telling me that Fatboy Slim had his copy of 'One Step Beyond' because he wanted to sample that bit from 'Nutty Theme' where Suggs says 'Rhythm' for a song of his. He also told me that it was he who wrote the 'Vote For Fred' manifesto. Remember, Frederick C. Threwe and all that. Anyway, he promised to do an interview for my fanzine (whether that happens or not is another thing) and gave me his e - mail address........... A really nice guy. Vince Carden (Madness Unsugged Editor - dripfedvin at yahoo.com) [4] - AUCTION RESULTS - FINAL CALL FOR WINNERS/BIDDERS Hi gang! Go and take a look at once! Robert Hazelby [5] - IN SUPPORT We are proud to present you with the `Madness Unsugged` exclusives. Two tales from members of bands who played support to Madness in the eighties, written especially for the fanzine. First up with his account of those heady days is Chris Bostock of the Jo Boxers followed by Adele Winter of The Friday Club, the last signing to the Two Tone label. MADNESS / JOBOXERS TOUR 1983 In the early 80's I was the songwriter of my group `JoBoxers` and co - wrote the hits `Just Got Lucky` and `Johnny Friendly`. Anyway, we had a great time on the Madness UK tour in February and March 1983 during which our single `Boxerbeat` rose to no.3 in the UK charts. This ended with a finale at London's Dominion Theatre where Madness were joined by a Salvation Army band and the show was recorded for a radio broadcast. Not to be left our, we waited for `Night Boat to Cairo` and made an impromptu appearance dressed as Sphinxes by draping towels over our heads and tucking them behind our ears. Then, stripped to the waist, we crawled, heads up and looking straight ahead, across the stage to take up a formation along the front as if guarding the Pyramids. Madness were a little startled but pleasantly surprised by the extra props for their show and acted as if it had all been planned. I've heard the programme repeated on the radio and you can hear Suggs` reference to `those naughty JoBoxers`. Chris Bostock MAD NOT MAD TOUR 1985 As a band member of The Friday Club this was the moment of a lifetime, to be on the Madness tour and be on Two Tone!! Ecstatic but always aware that we had to work hard, I will always remember being stood out front watching them perform `It Must be Love` and we all looked at each other and knew this was a moment from heaven! Suggs were a green suit and red gloves for much of the tour and had a thing about asking the audience to look under their seats only to find nothing there - he loved it! As people, Madness were always really friendly and supportive - Suggs, Carl and Lee were always making sure things were alright for us and reminding us that they started their first tour staying in tents. They gave away tickets to kids for their concerts, especially in Ireland. I have many memories but one that stays in my mind. After performing in Cork, I was out front watching them when Suggs announced he had been helped back to his hotel after some lads found him collapsed drunk outside a local radio station! Immediately this lad of about 10 said to me `That was us miss`. It really tickled me and the same thing happened in Dublin!!! They are such a lovely bunch and real family people. This was 15 years ago and I can still remember so much and know it was a really special time. Adele Winter. Thanks go to Vincent Carden for his kind permission to use the above. For further information including subscription details to the excellent `Madness Unsugged`, please get in touch with Vince at the following: Vince Carden, House of Fun, 5 Hudson Road, Glasthule, Dublin, Ireland E-mail - dripfedvin at yahoo.com [6] - REEF PAY TRIBUTE TO IAN DURY AT GLASTONBURY Hi all! While browsing the Glastonbury site on nme.com I perchanced on the following article. Maybe I missed it but I never saw it mentioned on the telly... -------------------------------------------------------- Reef pay tribute to Ian Dury at Glastonbury... REEF have just left the PYRAMID STAGE at GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL today (Saturday, June 24) having paid tribute to IAN DURY. Frontman Gary Stringer told the audience: 'When we said we were going to play this festival, Ian Dury was on the bill. We were really excited, you know.' He paused, then shouted: 'Come on! Let's hear it for Ian Dury!' and the band launched into Ian Dury And The Blockheads' 'Sex And Drugs And Rock and Roll', to a rapturous response from the audience. Afterwards, the staff at the tent for the Bacup Cancer Charity which is only a few yards from the side of the stage, said they were astonished when they heard Reef burst into a rendition of the song. Dury supported Bacup before his death from cancer earlier this year and the charity organised a tribute concert two weeks ago for the singer, featuring The Blockheads playing with a roster of stars including Robbie Williams. (Mr.G - what!! No mention of Madness!!) The volunteers manning the stall said they were delighted at the unexpected tribute and added: 'We've had loads of kids in asking who Ian Dury was, so this is fantastic, now they know what he actually sounded like.' -------------------------------------------------------- So there you go! Hopefully we'll get to hear/see it during the highlights package they always run. Mr.G [7] - OFF TO BED, STRAIGHT TO SLEEP That just about wraps it up for another edition of the MIS. A big thank you to all who helped out by providing information for this issue. It really is appreciated. Please keep it coming and I'll continue to print it. Some website news to finish up with, and following my article a few issues back in the MIS, Wozza has kindly offered to take over the reigns of the MIS Online website. This gives me more time to put together the weekly bulletin's as well as trying out other non Madness related things. The website isn't up and running as of yet as Wozza has to faff around with the many links amongst the code so that everything points to the right place. Once the site is up and running I'll let you know here. With Wozza in charge, you can be sure that the site will at least have regular updates. Until next week. All the nutty best, Robert Hazelby
